Can anyone tell me what the manufacturer part / model number is that corresponds to the 914-6 starters? I'm assuming they were Bosch. The Porsche catalog part numbers:
  • 923-604-101-00
  • 901-604-102-CX
  • 901-604-102-DX
Meaning if I had a photo or one in my hand I could look at the number on the starter and see if it matched.

I poked around the interwebs quite a bit and find lots of "compatible" starters. Nothing that seems trustworthy in terms of the original Bosch identifier.

I was hoping to find a reference like DerWhites Bosch Electrical Parts for 356 Porsches!, where he basically cross referenced a bunch of Bosch service manuals with the Porsche parts books and made charts. I have found it to be an amazing reference in terms of trying to find correct original parts on our 356.

Thanks.

Stock starter is .8 hp starter. In 1974 Porsche upgraded the 911 starter to 1.5 hp. Lots of people use the upgraded 911 starter. Do not have starter handy to see part number

Rebuilt starter for 911, 914-4, 914-6 up to 1973 use SR17X
Rebuilt starter for 911 74-89 use SR68X

I emailed Bosch the Porsche part numbers to see what they'd say. I didn't even expect a reply honestly. They came back within 1 business day with quite a bit of info on the original models, and currently existing options.

I've had this starter and alternator sitting in my 'spare parts' bin for about 30 years... Think the alternator is original and I had it rebuilt, just never got around to swapping it back in since the current one seems to be working. Not sure where the starter came from.
