A friend is getting a new CA title for a '72 and having an independent traveling VIN inspector do the verification. They are asking that the car have the proper emission sticker...

I'm not aware of what/where that sticker should be nor what it looks like.

Any help appreciated.

I did a quick Google search and AA has them but it looks like the earliest is for a 1973. Can't find anything for 1972 yet...

As of this writing, 1975 or older don't need a smog inspection. Why would the VIN inspector need to see an emissions sticker? WTF does emissions have to do with VIN verification?!

If you have access to a laser printer, you could produce your own Silver Foil Labels.

Thanks to everyone for the info. It's not about smog requirements or a smog test. Apparently, this particular inspector wants to see the sticker. Perhaps to ensure it's not a gray-market car?
I've used other inspection services and one time, the chassis was missing that door jamb/perforated sticker and the CHP officer just marked "sticker missing" and there was no issue.
Apparently, there's no "standard" inspection process...
Again, thanks for the input/info.

Auto Atlanta has years 73-76 maybe they can source a 72.

I ran into the same requirement on my 75.
Out of state car being first licenced into California.
And that was by AAA.

The explanation - right or wrong - was: While it does not need emissions testing, it is still against the law to modify the emissions.

It seems like the sticker covers their you-know-what on the application process.

My 74 California Blue Plate car has no such requirement.
By the same AAA employee.

Go figure......

just stick the AA repro 73 sticker on.
it looks like the same sticker.
labels don't have a date on them.

as if the inspector would know.
probably some box he has to check on a form that some clean air politician,
instructing some hapless bureaucrat, has decided is an absolute necessity of proper process to ensure the states C02 tonnage will meet the obligations of the kyoto treaty in 2030. if its like here - then anything govt. requires is bound to be straight out of the mind of a three thumbed four eyed certified f$%k wit thinking they are going to stop the ross ice shelf from slipping into the southern ocean before they manage to sell their holiday house 5 feet from the beach.

The emissions sticker does say the model year on it though.

There's also a CA and 49 state version, though I'm not sure that matters. I have a very dirty/hard to read 49 state version on my 72.

CarBone in Poland (yes, Poland) is a terrific source for decals. You can email them with a picture of what you seek and they are very responsive and turn-a-round is quick. beerchug.gif

Take it to the DMV. All they looked at (a few years ago, mind you) was the VIN plate and stamping. The "independent service" is trying to justify their fee. Also, ANY sworn officer can verify in California.

I think you can even get a "travel to the DMV" permit to have it done. Or maybe I just drove it anyway. .25 miles one way. . without plates. It's been a bit!

I moved from Florida to California in 1989, the car was inspected by CHP, showed Florida title, registration, officer just looked at the vin. I had to have the car smog checked for several years before it was no longer necessary.
I also have a 1972, I will take a photo of the emissions sticker later today.

If you can get a good straight on pic, get some of that sticker printing paper. Sticky on the back. I got it at office max. And just print one and stick it on. You can always get the foil one later.

apologies @clayperrine
i was trying to stay this side of the thin blue line.

i offered the outburst as the emission sticker puzzle in california arises as a story hits the newspapers down here - namely that the govt. severely underestimated tonnage of CO2 produced by vehicles in australia over the last decade.
apparently the bureaucrats neglected to factor in the popularity of the SUV boom!
they had assumed aussies were driving kias and "ford escorts" when they weren't.
i was attempting to describe the public servant sphere of govt. in the good old "bbc - yes minister" mode and not stray into the other sphere. beerchug.gif
