Did 74 914 come with a chrome muffler tip?

Did the 914-6 have them?

Was it a factory option for 74?
Was it an aftermarket for 74?

I never saw one on my car, or don’t remember, our lost it?

I am familiar with the square tip chrome for the 911.
And the slightly smaller one for the 912(up to 69).

It was an accessory slip on chrome tip available for all 914s.

Standard on all 914 6s
Except for cars with sport mufflers.
The factory chrome tip on a 6 had square cross section rim.
Current ones have a round cross section.
Will provide pic soon.

Larger for -6, smaller for -4 muffler

Does anyone have a factory photo with chrome tip on a 914 4?

And if not factory, then period photo?

i made one up out of stainless.
in fact it runs all the way to the muffler as a stainless pipe.
looks good. i used my original tailpipe muffler flange plate and welded up the two together and bolted it up.

if you are after an OG style slip on one for the 74 and if its a 1.8,
you might pick one up from a VW parts website.
perhaps a bus slip on tail pipe chrome tip? - they also ran pretty much the sameish muffler.

Here is the one on my old banana. It seems like a reduction in diameter from the muffler out so I hope that isn't stock, but it might be.

I think the rolled edge chrome tips really look nice. I have an original “square” edge tip for my 6 but I am afraid to install it as it is perfect. I run mine with a new Dansk rolled edge chrome tip.
My pet peeve is seeing cars with the chrome tip sticking out 6” past the valance. Looks wrong. My tip is probably2.5” beyond the valance.

OEM 914 2.0 tail pipe

I put it on a new Dansk muffler for a 1.7 & the fit is nice & tight.

I have never seen the tip listed as an Mxxx option. So, it would seem to be an accessory offered by the US dealer network and not a Factory installed option. Volkswagen Products Corporation of Fort Worth, TX was an arm of the distributors that sourced accessory parts for dealers to sell. If the item had a ZPW part #, then it was an official aftermarket accessory.

I think the photo shows a period correct New Jersey license plate.
Porsche Audi NA was located in Englewood Cliffs, NJ in that period.
My wife worked there for a summer.
When driving around with friends we would go through the headquarters parking lot
to see what new and unusual cars were there.
We saw the first Turbos, Scirroco race cars and more.
