So I had my hibernating 1975 1.8 shipped from California to Florida. I now have a garage vs driveway to work on it. Today, turned the fan by hand. I assume this means it’s no seized up. I checked the oil and it actually looked good.

Trying to figure the best path to actually starting the engine. I know I have to clean the tank. Done that before. Should I remove spark plugs and lubricant the cylinders before I turn it over with the starter? Obviously no coil wire.

What path would you recommend? Obviously I may only have one chance to get it right.

Thanks for the help!

Cheers

Is this a fresh build or an old motor?

If old..
Fuel flush, new fuel lines.
Remove plugs, spin till oil pressure is up.
Insert plugs, add fuel, start it
Run till warm
Replace oil and filter
Might want to replace oil and filter before starting, then again after 20 min after it’s warmed up
Then go fix everything else.

Unless this is a flip….enjoy the process
Fix all the things that have always annoyed you.

Before starting, you should also check for fuel leaks. Look all the hoses over for visual cracks and damage. Then pressurize the system by letting the pump run, and look (and smell) for leaks again.

And if the car has original plastic lines in the tunnel, think hard about replacing them.

Don't think, just do. Don't trust your car to 50 year old plastic hoses under FI system pressure.

IT TURNED OVER NICELY. Next is stainless steel fuel lines.

1) what do y’all recommend
2) can I replace them with the engine in?

As usual thank you for all y’all help

If you drop the engine…..it may be years before you drive it again.
“While you are in there” will consume you.

"While you are in there" can be a scary place, many of us reside there and .... well you know.
Best of luck with your project

So would you get it running first and then pull the engine? I still need to replace the fuel lines, clean the fuel tank, fix the exhaust and brakes… oh and all the other stuff.
