I think I am about to lose another motor....
Valves were adjusted what.. 2 weeks ago, less even, and now it sounds like thumbing a hair comb, when you come off idle thru 1200-1300.. or thereabouts. I am beat. I can't make anything fail the same twice, and never on a meter.. last night I was sure I nailed down a CHT problem, today, it's fine. (should be.. it's new)

Thing was tuned up 2 weeks ago, and ran for about 60 minutes since that time, without incident,
otherwise..
3 motors, would that be a 20k record?

I have put up in the 150k range, on more than one.
I see some liquor coming, when I scrape these 9 dimes together.

Wait.... Your still running a stock motor??
Um.. You need a conversion. Remember my attitude with my engine? (I either need a full rebuild, or a new engine, so I'll just get a new engine....)
Don't give up YET.
Wait until the drugs start to wear off. Then do some more. Just don't give up. There will always be more drugs.....
Uhhhh.
I know the car has FI, and I have zip/zed/zero experience with FI on a type-IV, BUT
When my weber equipped brigs & stratton x 4 made that binkibinkibinkibinkibinki sound, it turned out to be an intake valve opening too early. Compression test time?

Oh great! I'll just adjust it to open later.

The problem that manifests itself as a sometime 'stumble' must also fail lean.. at higher ranges, I'd *imagine*, and cooks the heads. Theory.
I live too far away from Mecca, to make the Haj. The closest 914 pick-n-pull I know of, is about 2,219 miles away.
I don't want to put a radiator in this car.

It might be too late, but a good A/F mixture gauge, a CHT and/or EGT gauge might make some good troubleshooting instruments, or at least you could see the hammer getting ready to fall, and shut her down.
Bummer Miles...wish I lived closer, we could slap my gauges on there and see what's what.

you're in savanna, GA.....thats like how far from Loueyville?
road trip!
i could bring my box too.
i dont know valve adjustments though.
i have parts.

sounds like the DD problem that dropped two valve seats on him. Rich and Brad finally figured that out for him.

As ever, thanks for the moral support. The brittle sound of valves, make me gnash my teeth together.
After my recent experience, I understand why the relay box is considered to be the crossroads, of weakest links.

What motor are you running? If it turns out to be valves I have some core 1.7 heads you could have for the cost of shipping. They would need to be freshed but there next to free. Man your having a string of real bad karma.

It's a stock built 2.0, it's not something I think I care to work at, anymore.
My biggest problem... at the moment, is my other car is 2 hours away, and I don't have room to park it here, it can't even navigate my driveway.. =\

I can't take this defeatest attitude anymore. I will not come back on this board until you fix your car. Shall I say goodbye to everyone?
Was I gone long enough?

People show up here, to the spider's lair, and they say, "Hey, I am a newbie! I found half of a rusted cowl in a field! Should I restore it! Convert it to a /6??"
And we push them!
Diabolical!

Just yell "Im Miles Hendrix, Biatch" at it and that should straighten it out a bit.

Can you pull all of your rockers off, then put a straightedge across all of the valves on each head? That way you can see if you're dropping a seat.
Then you can troubleshoot from there.
Also, you're running stock 2.0L rockers, right? Maybe swap over to the early 1.7L rockers and 911 adjusters. Should be a fairly easy in-car swap over...

LOL Dave!
Tom, all good stuff, will look it over. More from the driver's side, than the passenger side, more the rear, than the front.. definately valvetrain related... not the only problem.

ouch....

ouch....

Keep your head up buddy. If I had any ideas for your engine, i'd be glad to help, but there are much better engine gurus on the board. I just turn wrenches until it runs (and doesnt leak oil

).
Maybe a -6 would cheer you up?
nah...
lose another motor is too much oversimplification. Ya won;t lose a motor unless it has some catestrophic failure at speed. Otherwise it may mean a new head or a valve job, but maybe not even that. You said you just had valves adjusted, right? One or two just aren't right
My last certain rebuild has been defered 25 or 30 k miles be really careful, 3 times over I did the valve-adjustment. I am certain it was more exacting than any shop does. Corrected the aformention tight intake valve. Also had a fuel delivery problem that led to oilfouled plug. I would look at the plugs Poor combustion for any reason makes the valve-train pretty noisy. Could it be fuel pump related? Just a hunch....

could you elaborate on fouled plugs causing excessive valve noise?
this probably explains my soft kunk sound at idle....

Scott, my man.. thanks..
I have been hesitant to report good things today, but after r&r on the relay board, and removing the harness, re-re-terminating a few places, rerouting spark wires, re-replacing the CHT, and re-everything you can imagine..
i think i have a fully (no aar) sorted electrical, and injection system. shhhh... The combing noise is minimal when warm, nearly non-existant hot, and as annoying as you can imagine cold. 1&4 were spot checked (time people!) and were in spec.
I did all that, and carved a fingerboard extension for an F model mandolin, and glued in the neck, in a day.. so...
Not bad, for an 'owner'.. hehe
God help me, I am no mechanic.

Maybe you should change from Rock 'n' Roll to County and Western. Your 914 experiences have enough drama and heartbreak to compose a tear jerk ballad.
Here are my marketing recommendations if you want to get some air play and climb the charts with your new CW song. (OMG <:cue Twilight Zone music:> I just realized that Country Western has the same initials as Concours Weenie.

)
1.) Change your name to Merle Hendrix.
2.) Substitute 'Pick 'em up Truck' for 'Porsche' in the lyrics.
. 2a.) If you must say 'Porsche' it should be pronounced 'Porch'.
3.) Use 'Cousin' instead of 'Goat'.
4.) Replace 'Bong' with 'Tobacce'.
5.) Drink more Jack Daniels and less Cassadores.
6.) Wear Wranglers not Spandex.
The choice of boots, tattoos, hair styles and abuse of pills are all optional.
