In fact, it says
here that the side stripe indicates that its a
'74 Matador X Coupe, apparently, the sporty version.

A little different than a 917, here is a photo of Mark Donohue winning the Riverside 500 in a Matador.

story of that race in "Unfair Advantage."
first, you've got the conjunction of west-coast, road race, and Donohue.
Penske was one of the first, if not the first, to put disk brakes on a NASCAR sedan - everybody else ran out of brake and used a combination driving sideways and eah other to slow down.
they were about 100HP down to the rest of the pack but they had some new sticky prototype tires. the bad news was the tires needed to be HOT to work - and the car was so uncompetitive in traffic that Donohue couldn't work the car hard enough to heat the tires.
so they made an "unscheduled" stop early that got them out of traffic and most of the competition wrote them off as having engine troubles. meanwhile he's out there running record laps solo without having to work too hard to pass.
the other teams were flabbergasted at the end of the race - "how'd he win? i never saw him all day!?"

Being something of an old fart with a very good memory.....
Quote from the AMC commercial of that era....
First guy (Looking at neighbor's new car).. "What is it?"
Second guy (showing off new car to his neighbor).. "It's a Matador!"
First guy... "What's a Matador?"

You say that like it's a Bad Thing.
I remember that commercial too. AMC also had a commercial where they made a 6 foot long submarine sandwich in the back seat of a Pacer.
But then, I can even remember seeing a Porsche 914 commercial back in the day. Honest.

Not too shabby for an American 2-seater that wasn't made out of fiberglass.

'68 & '69 had the same suspension. '70 had alot of improvements based on the trans am effort.
remember these weren't 150 hp 2,000 lb imports. but could match or beat any other "full size" performance car.
