I bought this BB on BAT after throwing out a bid double the previous one last August. I didn't think it would be enough but.......woops, I bought a car. I've been pleased with the condition of the car and connected with two long term owners, one who did the restoration in roughly 2010. They have been great to talk to and added to my comfort level with what I have.

I've just started a list of projects to refresh the car a bit as it has sat for a long time and some things are just not quite right. One of the big discussions during the auction was how bad the rocker stripe looked. Too tall, not the right letter height/spacing, etc. I bought a replacement on 914 Rubber and started to remove the existing one. Heat gun on lowest setting. All was going well until the last bit and I pulled some paint. S&*(

I have not lined up the new stripe. I'm hoping I can rattle can this area and cover it wit the new one. Ugh!

Any other thoughts?

The other project today went a bit better. The driver side door striker post was loose. I removed it, cleaned it up and tacked a weld on the back side. Door closes and opens fine now.

Don't rattle can...your car is too nice.

Most proficient body and paint shops can blend that in for you and no one will be the wiser.
Do it right the 1st time.

If vinyl can pull off the paint, the paint was done wrong. Sorry.
Either sanded too smooth, paint hasn’t bonded to primer or both.

Concur with both above. Paint should not have pulled off under any conditions... and let a pro spot it in correctly. It will be undetectable... No rattle can touch ups!

I hear you on the rattle can. I was hoping this area would be 100% covered by the new stripe but I'll get the other side off and take it to a body shop I've used that can do smaller projects. I was wrong in my 1st post. This paint was done around 2000. I rechecked with the PO who did the restoration. I was surprised as the paint seems to have held up really well. Hoping this was an anomoly.

I just read recently in another post on 914world that the stripes were dealer installed (so the location varies from car to car).

Get the paint fixed by a shop for sure. That LE is way to nice for rattle can.

I remember a 356C was restoring, both doors new skins. After paint realized the holes for the handles were too small. Used one of the hole-step bits, got them correctly sized. Went to peel off the painters tape, even being careful not to peel from the rough edge. One of the doors a stripe of paint came off!

That was a $25k paint job! The painter was super good about taking the door and redoing the whole thing.

Always worried me though, if painters tape lifted off paint......wow.

I have a motorcycle frame that the paint isn’t bonded properly to the primer. It chips too easily. But that was $500 and won’t be hard to repaint one day. The car will need a total repaint one day. A hot sunny day or a really cold day might be all it needs to separate the paint from the body.
