Playing with stuff today and thought I would pass some pictures along. Found out there are TWO slightly different 915 transmission flanges. The one on my 914 trans is the early without a flange. The second has a lip like the 944 axle. The 74- up 100mm stub axle is shown and the gasket goes to the inside. There is an early 100mm NLA heavy duty boot and the cheap 944 replacement version. Cleaned and gun barrel finished 2nd style trans flange. Have a chrome moly axle set for full floating axles. Using 944 CV joints.

More than two types of output flanges, and that’s just the coarse splined ones. The number cast I to them can be the same for all with the same dia head. Then there are variations on shaft dia (34 or 35mm), length (LSD, non LSD) and the face width where the gaskets rests from the case. I have a few of these iterations and my last 915 customer bought the wrong flanges (34mm) so they were wiggly in the bore and not useable with his diff. The parts were cast with the same pn and then machined for what they were needed on that casting.

Yes, course spline was used with 7:31 ring and pinion 915 gear boxes up to around 1975. These course spline flanges are compatible with 914/901 trans. Mid 75?-86 are fine spline flanges used in 8:31 ring and pinion 915's. The fine spline flange is not compatible with 914/901 trans.
There is also the 1985-1986 915 trans with 108mm fine spline flanges, with no need for gaskets (#2). I am using this 915 trans in my 914.

Hi Mark,
I see you have sway away axles. Are they the 33 spline 20.25 long axles?
Happen to have a part # for them? I need a set for my 6r.
I was looking for a set a few days ago on the sway away site but didn't see them listed.
My brothers 6 conv is using the mod 914 axles, with the 100 mm 911 sc outer stubs, early 5 lug hubs, and 915 100 mm trans flanges. All fits and works pretty well. His setup uses the gaskets at both ends (inner/outer) of the cv joints.

I love that as these cars get older, the pictures are better, and all the parts are shiny and clean!

Luke,
I bought those axles about 5 years ago. Yes, they are 33 spline 20.25. No idea of what is available.
Mike,
Thanks for chiming in on the flanges. I was only covering what I found in the coarse ones that would fit our transmissions.

PMB usually has sway away and is also carrying empi conversion axles.
