Full Version: UV dye for oil leaks--any experts?

I just used some AC Delco dye and a UV light to identify oil leaks on the front of my engine. The dyed oil started out bright orange, but after 20 minutes of running, and with the oil up to temp, the orange vanished. The oil then showed up as bright blue, which it did without any dye.

Does anyone have experience with UV dyes? Is this typical? Any better dyes that last longer?

See my thread for more details and photos.

The dye should last as long as it was mixed with the oil, removal is an oil change. The AC Delco was the one I used didn’t take me long to find the 2 issues I had.

Did the color stay orange?

Did the color stay orange?

The color is a fluorescent cyan, kinda blue/green, when viewed with a uv light but becomes invisible when added to the oil.

Did it work to help you find the leak?

I think so. But it turns out that the Valvoline oil by itself glows blue under UV. When the dye changed the oil to orange, it was easier.
