Oil change and Valve Adjustment on new Engine Rebuild

What is normal for a new engine.

My rebuilder has scheduled the following:

Oil and Valve Adjustments after

100 miles
350 miles
750 miles
2000 miles
And then every 2500 miles.

Your thoughts and input is appreciated.

Is there anything else I should know to break in this engine?
Thanks.

Seems like a lot of oil changes but that’s just my opinion. It certainly can’t hurt. We don’t baby our rebuilds. Drive them hard from the get go. Seat the rings. But I assume you picked a builder that you trust so I would follow their instructions. Have fun!

How about all the valve adjustments? Are they all necessary?

How did the factory break in engines when new?

Valves will move around a little while the engine is breaking in.

If your builder offers any kind of warranty on his work, I'd follow the break in schedule exactly as stated.

For an engine I built, I'd drive it hard for a few weeks and then go to a normal oil change and valve adjust schedule.

Seems excessive to me but it never hurts to be extra cautious with a newly rebuilt motor. beerchug.gif

My builders standard directions to me would include a similar number of oil/valves over 3000 miles

Slightly different mileage numbers

Do you really want to deviate from the builders?
I would not

What if there was some part defective or something goes wrong?

I will stick to the recommended so that I won't run into issues if there is a problem with the engine later... but did not have any experience with engine break ins previously so I thought I would ask. Seemed like a lot on the surface.

Wonder how the factory broke them in when they were new?

I think when they were new the first owners broke them in
Probably with little direction from the factory

The metal was also 50 years newer and much of the metallurgy in valve train has changed in that 50 years. As well as the change in oil technology

Use of high zinc oil is mandatory today

trust your builder, the person is being properly cautious.

Oil it cheap.
