Full Version: New Dansk Fuel Tank Frustration

I got my new Dansk tank installed, or mostly installed, in my BB yesterday.

Then realized my car is an earlier version and the tab to fit my metal expansion tank won't work. Grrrrrr. I maybe wasn't paying enough attention when I ordered it.

Luckily I have an early tank that I can get parts from.

I'll need to pull it today and weld the tabs on from the old tank. I do have a plastic expansion tank but that just doesn't feel right.......

Two steps forward, one back. That's how projects go I guess.

They make both an early and late version for the different tab alignments. I had to send mine back and order the right one as well.

Been there done that. My 74 is in a weird in between version that no one makes. So, it was a choice to buy one and add stuff from the old or take stuff off the new. I chose the former.

Also, make sure the plastic saddle fits over the top. Dansk welded my seam too high and if I cut it down I’ll lose the weld at the top.

@Van B I had that same issue. Some careful work with a 3" sanding disc and I was able to trim the flange down without getting into the welded area.

Yup, as is typical for me, the frustration is usually self induced :-)

Given where I am in the process, modifying the tank is the next step.

I have a step by step on the job and includes the seam modification as well

@tygaboy , I’m going to measure again of course. But I recall that the weld walked and I would definitely cut into the weld.

But I think I can make up the difference with some rubber pads etc.

but you might also have the wrong tank if its for the plastic exp tank.
think there was a difference about those?
the plastic tank is may 74.
in between its an earlier tank but sans the bracket for the cannister.
which i don't think dansk make.
i seem to recall @Van B coming across this.

Now I have the correct tank. I removed it. Luckily it wasn't fully installed. Cut the expansion tank mounts off of a rusty donor, made the mod to fit the plastic hold down thingy (thanks for that link as it was an issue) and welded up the donor parts. A little paint and I'm good. My LE is a 2/74 build so maybe that weird early vs late period?

Van B
Yeah you’re in the lose lose bracket with the rest of us ‘74 owners.
But you ordered the tank that won’t have any unsightly unused brackets.

right on.
for that peroid late 73 to mid 74 when they make heaps of 1,8s and also the LE cars,
its a funny tank. no charcoal can bracket. but not a plastic expansion tank.

you can thank us lowly 1.8 owners for sorting that one out.
its a farken classic the 74 1,8.
as @StarBear has correctly identified with his superior judgement as a young man.

Correct again, @wonkipop!
My May 74 1.8 has the metal expansion tank and the canister in the engine bay.
