Most of the space saver tires that came on cars that are 20 years old are IFFY tires now.
The "space saver" tire has many design features that people overlook.
Brand new they are rated to last 50 miles.
They have speed limits on them as well (50mph is common)
I chose a cheaper far more durable path.
I bought a 15 X 5.5 steel early 911 wheel from Mepstein and am installing a new stock 914 tire on it.
No 50 MPH limit, might go 20K if needed.
Doesn't look cool but should be drop dead reliable.
I FAR prefer the look of the folded-up space saver and Fuchs wheel like Bob B.
It would piss me off to go through the BS of putting that on the car just to find out the 20-year-old rubber will not last a single mile and a roll back wrecker will be needed anyway.
I own a decent Boxster spare wheel from a 97 we have. I still bought the steelie for the 914.
In my book a spare tire should be able to get you home from anywhere...
This is what a good spacesaver looks like. I say premo shape
Bob B

Still has all of the titties!
Finding a space saver in that condition is the way to go.
Is it date coded? I'm nervous at 20 on a space saver. As long as you limit yourself to 50 most people could control an explosive decompression/tire lose without vehicle damage.
But, even brand new that tire has a "recommended usage" of 50 miles and a true lifespan of under 250 miles.
Plenty for most folks, just not for me.
On an old fold up I'd be worried about failure at the folding creases.
I'd use Bob's spare; I'd just be very aware of it.
If Bob let me drive his car (normal tires on it) I'd be stupid careful anyways.
Still looks better than anything else mounted sideways in the frunk...
