This looks like more fun than tossing the sausage. It also can be done on a 914 budget and you have a new car. The body and chassis kits work out to $4000. +or- USD. Not including shipping. Check the website, a more frugal Arial Atom.

I like their 'Riot' model ... same basic layout, but you can use a motorcycle engine and chain drive.

I recently emailed them for info here is the reply:
Hi,
Many thanks for your enquiry.
We do ship to the States and the pricelist includes a £200 premium for a LHD
version. We pack the kit ready for shipping (for a charge) and then you
arrange shipping from our factory and handle all customs issues within your
own country.
As you are outside the EU you will be able to claim back the VAT which is
17.5%. Hence just divide the prices on the website by 1.175 to find out what
you'll pay once the VAT has been refunded.
Please don't hesitate to ask if you require any further info.
All the best,
SteveHmmm.... If I can convince the wife I may do a Riot.
My best,
Mike D.

Wouldn't it be a clusterfuch to get it through customs though?

Not necessarily. Without a drivetrain, it's pretty much just "car parts", which get through customs all the time. The difficult bit would be licensing it in some states. It would qualify as a kit car in pretty much every state, but laws vary on how it's classed, and whether or not it would be subject to smog testing.

Is it legal to build a kit car in RHD as opposed to LHD? save some $$ up front, and have a much more attention getting car when you are done.

Going through Wendy's drive-thru in reverse might be a bit of a pain.
