Any 914 history gurus out there know what size tires the factory 914/6 ran in competition? Were they 50 or 60 series tire?

no.
914.6 in competition predated 50 or even 60-series tires.
914.6 raced on racing tires. typically Goodyear Bluestreak Sports Car Specials in north America. factory cars ran on Dunlops.
bias ply slicks. (or rains or intermediates as conditions required, especially in the endurance events.)
the performance street tire of the day was the 185-70/15

Maybe my 205/55/16s don't look so odd then...more like the factory racers, haha.
Yep, I think ~60-70 series (on a 15" wheel) is equivalent to the race tires of the day.
