Hello Everyone

I tried to use the search function on this but was unsuccessful...

My gas cap gasket seems to have failed, and leaks when tank is full and I turn hard.

I have a metal cap with a cork gasket.

Does anyone know where I could buy a new one?

The original gasket was fiber. Check tbe cap to be sure the spring is not briken and the rubber bladder under the inner ring is intact. If so the cap will notmaintain pressure on the gasket.

I bought one from 914rubber since I had just installed a new tank. It was so thin I trashed it and reinstalled the old one which is much thicker and still sealed properly. shades.gif

The spring is not visible. Press down on the center of the inside of the cap. It should be under tension.
If it is broken you ned a new cap. Same as a VW Beelte in the 70-74 year range. I dont like the 914 rubber seal either. I make rhem out of a thick fiber material.

This one had a broken spring. See how far down the inner ring is? It should be all the way up.

Hello Everyone.

I ordered a new gasket, installed it and it did not solve the gas smell problem.

I then noticed the overflow hose is disconnected. I think the gas is being sloshed upwards and drains through this hose onto the car.

Should this be connected to something?

Also there looks to be a breather and this is not capped off either.

I purchased a new gasket...no improvement.

I did notice this drain hose which is dumping the sloshed fuel onto my car. should this be connected or capped off?

First - stop overfilling the tank

Second route hoses properly.

Orange is overflow - route out holes below tank to ground

Green is supposed to go to the vapor expansion tank and then to charcoal canister

Looking at your blue tank I can only assume that you no longer have the expansion tank, charcoal canister, and associated plumbing back to the engine.

Route green line same as orange if need be. You will have vapor / smell until you route to a charcoal canister which gets purged at each drive. Click to view attachment

Yes charcoal canister is long gone. So Tie both together and route down to hole below tank?

I wouldn’t worry about trying to tie together into a common line if that’s what you mean. Just route both under car.

If you park outdoors you’ll be fine.

If you’re parking in a garage you should look into finding the expansion tank and charcoal canister. I had to go this route - like your car, mine came to me “fixed” by DAPO who got rid of the evap system when they installed carbs. chair.gif Full disclosure: I was a DAPO back in the 80s with my first 914 and ditched the evap stuff when I went to carbs . . . And dealt with occasional gas smells.

For what it’s worth, by having tank vented to atmosphere, it’s not great for the environment and over time your most volatile parts of gasoline evaporate off which I’d rather be burning and making power with instead of smelling up the garage.

Not to speak for other posters, but the gist of what I am reading is strongly suggesting that you fix everything properly. It is hard to argue with that approach. That means sourcing the missing pieces and reassembling everything the way it was designed to be. Fixing other people's shortcuts/mistakes takes time and resources, but it is always on you to do things the right way. If you don't then you will keep having problems. beerchug.gif

Don’t worry about seeing the spring. What important is that the flat area where the gasket sits moves back and forth with spring pressure on it to force the gasket into contact with the filler inlet Click to view attachment

Mine is exactly like this one.... broken spring.

Can I buy a spring or would it be better to buy a new cap?

Does anyone have one to sell?

Use the easy button buy a used cap.

AA lists them at $33 used. A WTB ad should turn one up cheaper than that shipped in small USPS box.
