Anyone on here know about the car or the owner? Car looked to be nicely painted and well maintained, appearance wise except for the 3' flames coming out of the engine bay and the interior.

Sorry, Removed. I'll try to grab some screen shots.

sad.gif I hope everyone is alright. Always a fear …

I am sorry to see another fire…..hope all involved are ok. Looks like a nice car. A reminder our cars are old and most need updates to most if not all systems. Brakes, electrical, fuel systems etc, etc…
Geezer914
Sad to see. You have to check your wiring and update your fuel lines. Definitely SS lines in the tunnel.
bkrantz
Oh, crap.
FlacaProductions
Yikes.
And check that injectors aren't leaking - especially if it's sat for a while.

@Montreal914 - this is your hood, right? all good?
Montreal914
Yes, close to my work area, but it’s not me. Car is still on restoration jig which itself is on jack stands… rolleyes.gif far from being back on the road.

Extremely sad to see these fires that seem to be posted more frequently for the past little while. sad.gif

Everyone, should ask himself, when was the last time I replaced these various rubber hoses? Let’s check these clamps to make sure I don’t have any of the gear type, are any of them loose…

A reminder to install fire suppression…

Might be this one ???

That red 914 engulfed in a fire is gutwrenching.
I'm going through my air cooleds' right now with new upgraded PTFE fuel lines for this very reason. Just had all these (original) fuel lines pulled out of the '79 930>> low (11,250) orig miles and all non-ferrous fuel lines were hard + cracking. Get your old fuel lines into the dumpster and keep your investment safe !

Looked like a nice 914.

Reminds me to check extinguishers in my Bug and 914.

I've mentioned this before and this seems like a good time to repeat myself. If your running Gates Barricade fuel hose, check your hose clamps every 9-12 months. They loosen with time. beerchug.gif

I've seen and met this guy. Can't remember his name. He goes to all the So Cal VW Events and hangs out with the SDR VW Club in Pasadena...
That's too bad...

Good idea to check in general, but I'm curious, why would they loosen up more readily when using Gates fuel line?
(I just replaced all my fuel lines with Gates.)
Geezer914
I changed all fuel lines with Gates Barricade and installed Tangerine racing SS fuel lines in the tunnel. Even made elbows for the injectors using Barricade fuel line.. I just checked all the clamps after over a year, all tight.

Glendale Louisiana, Wisconsin, or California? (Sorry, couldn't resist) poke.gif
Hate it for the car owner, looked like a pristine example?

There is a Glendale in Arizona as well and another Pasadena in Texas.

On a more serious note, is there a readily available fuel line hose other than gates??

I just had to tighten a loose fuel line clamp, can’t remember what brand line I used, but had fixed/ replaced it about 2 years ago, loosened over time, and I don t drive the car much, few time s a year. I Did use FI type clamps.

Not when I was looking a few months back. Napa carries Gates Barricade FI rated hose in all the sizes I needed and I could buy it locally.

If the clamp loosens over time, I would blame the clamp not the fuel line.

Any SAE J30R9 rated hose should be fine.
You can use SAE J30R7 for carbed applications. In theory that would also work for stock 914 FI since it runs at well under 50PSI. But I prefer to use the R9 hose for any FI applications.

Does not have to be Gates brand. The SAE specific rating qualifies it for use with ethanol fuels.

moral of the story.

check your engine bay after you start up.
have a torch handy.
give it good perv.

stick your head down and take a big deep breath from under the right hand side rocker in front of the rear wheel.

ready to drive.

but before commencing the driving position get down on your knees and pray to god.

you can never be too careful with these babies.

i mean i knew 914s were burners when i bought mine as a dumb arse vacant headed australian wandering the streets of chicago in 1989.
..........and nothings changed.

look after your cars, buy a fire extinguisher. and keep on rolling. beerchug.gif beerchug.gif

i seem to recall there is one hill in wisconsin.
if my failed memory serves me correctly i visited said hill to watch the rolling stones on their steel wheels tour having driven up from chicago.
chicago being dead flat.
i believe the claimed hill was some kind of ski resort.
i wouldn't know for sure. it was summer. biggrin.gif biggrin.gif beer.gif

I might be inclined to agree with you if it weren't for the fact that all 8 in the engine compartment & both beneath the fuel will loosen on my '73. Also, wouldn't it take a tremendous amount of force to stretch the metal band on a proper FI style clamp? confused24.gif

This Glendale is in CA. Growing up there, to me, it's the only one that counts.

LOL....yea well ....I was born in raised in Pasadena CA. I can tell from the Verdugo "Hills" that that IS Glendale CA. I've been to both Glendale AZ and Pasadena TX and I won't say they don't count but very different from each other.

RE: Fires. I agree with Kent on checking the hose clamps loosening and here's my theory about that:

The rubber compound on the newer fuel lines is a harder durometer then the original lines and is harder to compress. The fuel clamps if you look closely have a fine thread as opposed to the worm drive type clamps. Given the quality of machined parts nowdays the threads have more tolerance and poorer quality than the originals. When I redid my fuel lines I used the original fuel clamps for this reason. Ugly looking but better. Just my thoughts.
rhodyguy
Exactly why shouldered clamps work so well.
