I have two rubber front bumper tops. 1 is old, wavy and the ends stick out like wings on a Gulfstream jet.
The other is generally in good shape but might have been repaired and one end is grey and white like primer or patch.
The wavy one is on now but I want to use the other one.
What can I spray on it to get a nice even black color? Probably needs to be a paint for rubber, not a rub on restore product for plastic.
Anyone use anything that worked. This car is not worth new parts right now.

I talked to a guy locally that had a shop and did restorations, he had a nice factory 6 he had restored ( I think his name was Steve, had a shop behind his house just north of Parker). His trick was to use rubberized undercoating sprayed thru a tube (like what comes with braked cleaner) to get the correct texture. The finished result looked very good. Here is the product he used. I have not tried it yet but you might practice on your crappy top.

This looked interesting, given Cerakote reputation. Not sure how it might work on rubber rather than plastic.

Another + for Mothers Back to Black. Helps put moister back into rubber, plastics etc.

another for back to black...been using it on bumper tops and sail panels for years.

I will try the Mothers first then. I thought about some undercoat or bedliner but I did not want the texture most of them give. If the straw fixes that, i will try that next.

Back to black will place chemicals on the rubber that soak in and will make painting anything over it a BITCH.

I use it all the time as well.
Works better than anything else for bringing rubber back.

If you're contemplating spraying something that you want to adhere, I wouldn't use the Back to Black first.

It works pretty well on the dash pad. Put it on heavy, let it sit, buff off excess.

I guess signals got crossed somewhere. There is no black in back to black. It is a topical dressing for something that is already black. As mentioned in the first post, I need to add black first. Looks like John understood that.
I did half the bumper top before I figured out the can was spraying correctly.
So I am back on the hunt for something to add black to cover up the grey and white colors on the bumper top. Now I have to fight the mothers too. Then Mothers might be a good dressing later.

I have a 75 and I use it on my bumpers and it does work great !!

This is a long shot but if you are up to experimenting I had great success fixing a bumper top with 3M 5200.

Maybe you could roughen the old bumper top with 60 grit and squeezee on a thin layer of 5200. The stuff really sticks and is really messy. Has been very durable

I look it up but most cleaner and re-conditioners don't add black, they just fix what is already there. That says it recolors so it might, plus the black smears on the bottom are a good sign.

Yes, it recolors the bumper top. It has a foam applicator attached.
