there is the faintest of a ridge where plate meets the inner bore. the line is dark. can i safetly clean this up with some 000steel wool, or is it not worth the bother and i'll wind up doing more hurt than harm?

I don't see why you shouldn't do it. I did it with mine with out any ill effects so far.
