From an empty tank I put in 2 gallons, then seemed to run out fairly quickly. Remembered about the reserve tanks but dont know how to activate it. How do I?

you don't.
the "reserve" is that amount of fuel remaining after the light comes on.
356's had an actual valve, but no Porsche since...

my 57 beetle had a reserve.....but not the fourteen....
