After weeks of procrastinating, getting the parts and finally just the damn time, finally dropped my motor.

What an awesome feeling. That article on the bird site was helpful and so was the advice on this site!

Now we're going to crack it open and see what's wrong with her....

get lotsa boxes and zip-lock bags and a good sharpie, too. Take a bunch 'o pics before you dissassemble stuff. Try to keep all the bits and pieces organized, cause stuff will get lost.

Yea. Right. You will loose the Sharpie right away. Throw all of the parts, bolts, wires, etc. in the boxes. It doesn't matter which box. Make a mental picture of each part and where it came from. The zip locks will be too far away from where ever you are at the time you need them.

During your part cleaning sessions make sure that no part goes back into the same box it came out of. The goal is to make sure all parts are mixed up real good and no two related parts are in the same box. During this time you should assure yourself that you remembered where everything goes.

At the time of assembly you will start the process of mentally recalling each part and where it goes. This process is quickly followed by the discovery that you have no idea where anything goes and you have a 3 dimensional jigsaw puzzle. This might take a while to solve but you will learn two things that are very important for the next engine tear down.

One, once you figure out how it all goes back together you will never forget it, and two, the next time you pull an engine apart you will separate each part into specific boxes, neatly grouped and labeled in zip lock bags.

Of course lesson two is useless for two reasons. First, you have forever remembered where each part goes, and second, you will loose the Sharpie and the zip lock bags will probably still be in the kitchen drawer.
