so... there are 25 splines on a 914/6|911 Hub???

mine (944 stubbies) look very much the same but i count 28 splines ...

yeah - i got 27 the first time.... but read 25 or 33 were available... but then realized, thats for CV splines

I found out one detail that was missing.....
If you look at the 944 stubs, they have a shoulder. The 911 stubs do not. If you use the 944 stubs, they won't put the preload on the inboard side of the bearing.
You need a set of these. They are spacer rings that take up the slack where the shoulder is.
Call Wes Hildreth and tell him you need a set. He has them for sale. 972-423-8526.
Oh.. and work is taking a big bite out of my 914club time lately.

i *think* what he means is that once the stubaxle is slid into the hub, the resulting surface that goes inside the wheel bearing is wider than the bearing itself, allowing for the hub to move (sideways) inside the bearing.
a small spacer on the stubaxle side of things would make it a tight & schnugg fit ...

same as milling down the edge of the hub?

Mill down the edge of the hub and the back of the 944 stub axle hits the inside of the trailing arm.

Excuses the lousy paintbrush editing......
The spacer goes over the stub axle. It takes up the slack between the stub and the bearing caused by the shoulder on the 944 stub.

I looked up the references for the bearings, and it appears as if the 944, '83-'88 uses the same bearing sets; it lists an inner and an outer set for each rear wheel along with a grease seal. I suspect that shoulder is where the grease seal rides. '89-'91 S2, and '91-94 968 use the same bearing as the late 911's (#513180), which has the same bore as the 914 bearing (42mm), but a larger OD (80mm) and length (42mm). FWIW.

I have access to 944 drive axles, are the cv or axles usable on the 914, are they stronger than stock 914, this is for a V8 conversion.

They need to be 6 bolt output shafts (to match the 944 CVs). I believe most 915 coarse spline shafts were 4 bolt w/2 pins like the stock 914 ones just with a bigger CV. Looking at my earlier notes from Clay, the 6 bolts were used in some 75-77 915s and 1976 912E tranny.
Good luck finding everything. I was going to do this, but ended up going w/later Carrera axles with the friction welded stubs and adapaters from patrick motorsports. Much less headache tracking down the parts and machining things.
