This was posted elsewhere, thought it might interest someone here. It's an interesting design. Rather than use a transformer to convert mains power, it uses a car alternator with his own regulator, and the mains power operates a 240V 5hp electric motor to spin this alternator at varying speeds. He points out a small gas engine could be used for complete portability...

that is pretty cool....remove the diodes from the alternator and you could have AC voltage as well for welding aluminum smile.gif (I know it's not that easy)
