We need new network switches for our office.

The new office is wired with Cat6. I already have a few PCs with 10/100/1000 ethernet ports.

I am looking to buy three 24-port managed switches with 10/100/1000 connectivity.

We have about 50 PCs in the office that access two SCO Unix servers and one Linux Server , but we will be going away from the servers and the PCs will be accessing more and more web-based content via our T1 connections.

What do I look for in managed 10/100/1000 switches?

What are the minimum specs I am looking for to ensure fast data transfer when all 50 PCs are running?

I need something rack mountable that can be linked together.

I have found this for instance...

http://www.dlink.com/products/?sec=0&pid=329

which has similar specs to this for 1/2 the price...

http://www1.us.dell.com/content/products/p...s=04&l=en&s=bsd

I'd like to stay around $500 to $750 per switch.

Thanks,

Karl

I imagine this goes on the same principle as Raby power.

YOU SEND MONEY AND THEY SEND TERABITS. MORE MONEY MORE BITS

Sandbox material?

Hmmm... I think the rules need to be clarified by Sir Andy. I checked the Garage and there were clearly a number of non-914 topics posted.

According to the "rules' of the garage... I followed them precisely...

1. same as "The Sandbox". no racism, no personal attacks.

2. no politics.

3. no religion.

4. no porn.

5. avatars and posted pictures have to be PG-13

6. Off Topics posts are welcome, but we insist that you label your post accordingly.
please use the list below as a guideline ...

OT: = Off Topic
NPC: = No Porsche Content

It was my understanding that the Sandbox was the "play" area (i.e., jokes, humor, etc.), hence the comments on the Forum Links about bringing your pale and shovel.

If this is the case, then I kindly request that Andy clarifies the rules. To me, the rules are ambiguous.

Regards,

Qarl

they are. all you need to do is read the whole post ... wink.gif

[....]
- keep it somewhat car related (that will include A LOT of the off topic stuff anyways)

says clearly OT posts in the garage should be somewhat CAR related (note i didn't say Porsche related!)

Ahaaa....

You know me... speed reader. The rest of the rules appeared off screen and I never bothered to scroll down. Actually, I had read them once initially, before the Addendum. When I checked yesterday, I saw the top part was the same, so I thought it was okay...

Sorry.

Okay... so how about this...

>>I am looking to wire my Porsche 914 with a local ethernet. I would like to install three gigabit switches in the front trunk. I am going to install a mini rack and some backup UPSs. What sort of specs should I look for in the switches. Rust is a concern...<<

Just kidding.... Andy, feel free to move this then, in light of my new understanding

after all this whining and namecalling from the guys that really wanted a OT forum,
all *i* want right now is for you guys to actually use the sandbox.

i mean, what good is a OT forum if no-one ever posts there? confused24.gif

use it and make it a fun place to hang out in the process ...

I think people are scared Andy... that you will take 914club away again... And then we will be SOL.

What power you hold in your hands...
