I have a set of rear springs of unknown rate; they are currently off the car, and stand 18 inches tall without any force compressing them. The diameter of the wire is approximately 9mm, and they have three green smears of paint near the middle of the coil. Anybody know if these are 100 lb springs, 140s? Any help is greatly appreciated. Based on Aarons answer.

You apparently have "WICKED TALL" springs.

Wow.

A good alignment shop should be able to test the spring rate for you. They have a machine that will do this.

It really is not possible to know the spring rating from the size, as the heat treatment and alloy have a big role (in addition to shape/size) in the spring rate. Also springs age with use, and can drop in stiffness, so what they was new may not be what they is now.

CD's 914 Spring Rate Data Page has been posted here about a zillion time; there should no longer be any mystery...
