Full Version: Wheel clearance measurements

Okay, I'm going to post a few pics showing the wheel clearance on a relatively
stock car with stickies, for future reference.

I've been using 6x15 ET36 cookies with 205/50/15 Kumho Victoracers for years.
They don't rub. I rolled the rear lips, as the 1970 cars did not have the factory
narrowed lip like all the other years.

I have 180 pound springs and about 2 degrees neg camber. So I took the
shock off and made the tire go about 3 inches higher than normal (about the
most compression I'm likely to get). The top of the wheel is just under the
fender.

205/50/15 victoracers have 8.1" max width on my 6" wheel.

Here is a pic looking up at the right rear.
Clearance is max 3/8" at the back of the tire. (I almost need a bit
longer rolled section, but tire won't compress enough to hit it).

This pic is looking to the rear of the fender. The width of this
wrench handle is 1/2" and it has no chance of clearing rolled
fender.

Pic of the inside fender well. There is at most 10mm
of clearance in there, pretty uniform because it doesn't
curve like the outer bodywork.

Here's what it looks like from the outside at this (supposedly max)
compression.

Now, you may be asking, what it the reason for all this measuring?

Well, I just got me 4 Boxster 7x16 ET40 rims (a guy combined two
sets). I wanted to see what could be done with race tires on these.

Unfortunately, I think I'm going with the outdated 205/45/16 Kuhmo
Ecsta V700, as there is not a lot out there in 205/16 sizes, and some
of them cheat and are really wide.

What I have now is 8.1" section width. I could get a old A3S04 hoosier
in 8.6", but it would be awful close, and those things wear too fast for
my taste (or money). The new hoosier A3S05 205/45/16 is 10.1" wide!

Any opinions on Hankook Z214? I don't know where to get those yet
but looks good at 40 treadwear and 8.3" section width.

Thanks all.

The whole tire carcass can move at least 1/2 in inboard (mostly) or outboard. I got an old pic here. Note the sidewall
on the rear tire. I got the marks on the inner fender to prove that 1/4 inch clearance wasn't enuff.

Yep, I took a video showing the tires at the autocross, and it scared
me. Most of the reason I want 7's instead of 6's is to have them move
less, better match of wheel to tire width for grip, and also be able to
run lower pressures without worrying they'll come off.

Thanks Rich, but I already moved things as much as I want to. It
would take a huge amount to accept anything bigger anyway.
