Full Version: Leaking Trans Gasket

So I finally did my first engine drop. What a PITA.
Hadn't been removed since late 80's. Had to soak things
with PB blaster for 3 days and use a
gear puller with some custom fabbed pieces to get the shift
rod loose.
Anyway, take a look at the picture.
I guess I need to replace the gaskets, (not sure how hard that is).

Any possiblity that his could be due to improper torqing?
Or in a really odd case, could it actually be engine oil?
The bottom of the transmission was pretty caked.
The oil is like hardened tar. Not too much smell. Smells more
like oil to me than trans fluid.
But the car has been sitting for the past 8 years so there isn't
too much smell.

The reason that I ask is that when I took off the drivers side CV
joint there was no CV gasket! Really! there was one on the
passenger side but not on the drivers side.
Kind of makes suspect alot of stuff.

Also, this tail housing has had the "ears" welded back on.

Could a slight misalignment cause uneven pressure
that could these gaskets to leak?

Thanks,

I can't really help you as I have no practical experience other than to say that that trans doesn't look to bad compared too many I've seen.
