I have a 75 2.0, that seems to be in decent shape (both structurally and mechanically), however now that I've had the car for 5 months I'm really starting to look at it closely and can see a dime sized hole on the sidewall next
to where the battery sits. (I know, no surprise) and am now wanting to get rust areas taken care of ASAP so the car lasts (and so that I can work on fun stuff like the interior and stopping that oil leak )

I've been working on the engine myself, but have no experience in welding or rust repair, and so I'm looking for someone in the greater seattle area (I will happily to drive a couple hours if need be) who can help me with this.

A bit of $ and undying gratitude (and a half-rack or 2 ) would of course be provided. I'm looking to learn about the process as well, and hope to find another 914 owner who really cares about these cars and who is really familliar with making these kind of repairs.

Any takers or people that y'all could point me to?

there is a reason that area is called the hell hole.

It is a right of passage to do that work yourself...

You need to buy a mig welder and learn how to weld.

Once you are in there working...you will learn the real reason its called the hell hole...

This might be why you have not seen anyone volunteer...

It is a shitty place to work...

And I wasn't really expecting a line of people begging to help.

But I really don't have the time to learn how to weld, and don't really want to make things worse (if indeed they are even that bad in the first place.)

Just hoping that someone might be willing to pass along some knowledge in person. If nothing else, I'd love to watch someone else go at it on their car so at the very least I could observe.

This time o' yr and with snow on the ground (at least at my place) dont get discouraged were out here, just prolly a bit self absorbed. There is strong group here in the NW that would help (or at least look on and kabitz w/ ) but you might have to bide your time until we can get another work party together.

yeah, cold weather and scraping knuckles isn't the best combination.

If nothing else I'd just be happy to be present when someone else tackling is structural rust on their car.

I'll probably put this post back out there when it's warmer and light outside for more then 6 hours during the day.

I can relate to what your asking. I too, have got a rusty teener. I do plan on buying a mig welder myself soon, and at some point will be joining the ranks of the bent around (and in way to many ways I'm not sure this body is ready to fathom yet), group. Everything is still up in the air for me yet, but, I can sure relate. I do want to make it work however! So, if you get anything going here regarding help, or a get together of any kind, for this, I would love to come take part, and a looky-peeky, and offer any assistance I can.

I am in the same boat too. I plan on taking a welding class this winter to learn how to use a mig. A friend said he will give my a mig if I take the class. It has been 25 years since I have welded and yes I forgot everything. Eddy

I just bought a MIG welder and have done some small things so far like fixing my muffler hanger, welding some holes in the body and valance, replacing part of the trunk floor, and replacing the battery tray. I am right up there with the world's worst welders but I'm getting better with every weld.

Thanks to everyone for the posts. As it was stated earlier, this probably isn't the best time of year to get everyone out for some sort of rust-removal / welding-how-to outing. So I'll probably
just bring up the topic again in the spring.

Its great to see others in the same spot though and I look forward to possibly
getting to meet a a few of you at some point in the future to compare notes and cars!

We tend to get together for breakfast and a drive 4 or 5 times a year here in the NW. Mainly in the summer. Be sure to save time in July for the WCC-06 in Portland. That is always a large turnout.

It looks like I got in this thread a little late but what the heck. I am new to 914's and need some help with my rust issues. I live in the south Everett area. I love driving to work in my 914 but I need to really get to work on the right side long and battery area. If someone in the Seattle area wanted to make an assembly line for doing repairs sounds like he would have some business with the number of folks who answered this thread.
