I'm trying to determine if the rear shocks are bad in my car. With them out of the car, you can push in on the rod it stays in. If I pull it out it stays out. If I remember correctly the front Bilts always pushed out. Whatsup?

are the rear dampers Bilsteins, or not? (you don't say...)
(or other gas-pressure damper?)
if not, they're supposed to stay where you put them.
only by cycling them can you get a clue of how much damping they'll have.
if they are gas-pressure dampers and they don't extend themselves, they're dead. or at least they're no longer gas-charged. that can be fixed at a Bilstein service center - but don't expect it to save you a lot over new dampers...
Bilsteins should be lifetime warrantied - do you have the original receipt ?

not gas pressure == they'll stay where you put 'em.
no matter how good or bad they are.
resistance to motion is (always) your only real measure of performance.

Actually what I was doing was changing the stock springs to W 140's. But I didn't want put to put back on broken stuff. The improvement was significant. Be better with the Billies/ gas. Right now I’m being strangled in another direction on the other project car. Thanks for your help.
And I didn't ever have to jump through a hoop.
