Can a 3.6 liter engine w/915 tranny be installed in a 914-6 without major modifications?

By "without major modifications" I mean that the car can be brought back to its original configuration....2.0 liter w/901 tranny.

If not, what is the largest engine that can be installed "without major modifications?"

3.6 REQUIRES a front cooler... as there isnt one on the motor...

3.2 is the last aircooled motor with the oil cooler on the motor.....

I would say the largest engine with the least modification would be a 3.2l motor.

That's what I did. The 3.2 can use the stock 2.0 oil cooler and doesn't really need an external oil cooler if your not racing it.

Some minor electrical changes and suspension upgrades and maybe brakes.

Works great for me.

The only major mod for the 3.6 different from all the rest is a front oil cooler.Ya gotta make a hole up front somewhere.

Other than that, everything about it can be easily reversed.

the 3.2L is the biggest "direct" bolt-in engine. even the motor sheetmetal fits (it doesn't with a 3.6) ...

Yes, Patrick Motor Sports makes great custom 3.6 to 914 sheet metal.

No,

It's just that the aftermarket sheet metal has to be much modified to get it to fit correctly.

The front portion of the 3.6 does have a different contour to it,I don't think anyone has had or found a kit that fits correctly right outa da box.

This old pic is a few years old,but it should give you some idea. All the yellow had to be added.

Why not put the biggest Porsche engine you can in there..

Make your 3.6 into a 3.8... or even better dont know if CMW still makes the 4.0L kits

now that would be cool
