Slight Hijack here!!!

Is the sideshifter a 901 trans or a 915? If it's still a 901, i.e just a sideshift 901 then what is the 915 trans and what car does it come from?

Have been wondering what the difference is between the 901 and the 915.

Thanks and everybody have a happy and safe holiday.

914 trans is a 901 with a flipped ring gear and different linkage and gearing

a type 915 is a 72 and later 911 box.
a type 911 is a 70-71 901 style box, with bigger flywheel and stronger case.

The 915 gearbox is a larger, heavier one (compared to the 901 type) used in 72-86 911s.

The 911 box was used in 70-71 911s, and is more or less a 901 with a pull-type clutch instead of a push-type clutch. There may be other differences (I wasn't aware of the case being stronger, but I don't pay as much attention to 911 parts as 914 stuff) but the biggest one was the clutch.

Ask Clay about the 911 box; he has one in his Six.

Trust me, Dave, the 911 box is NOT beefier. Cracking above the front pinion bearing is common, and there's no fix or preventive measure that I know of. Even the low HP T engined cars suffer from it, and cases are becoming difficult to come by.

FWIW, all 915s are not created equal. The 73s have the mainshaft seal installed backwards and from the inside, the cases were light alloy until the SC appeared on the scene, and they all share the spun bearing race problem in the differential housing. Until 1980, second gear explosions were more than common, and the redesign didn't entirely fix the problem. Synchros are stiff, and we hear many complaints about "hard shifting", something that was never a problem with the 901 series trannies. The Cap'n
