Okay,

Here's our own Dan (Almaden Valley) driving the Pickering 914-6 in class GM form at Laguna Seca. Dan was turning 1:49's during this session. It was the 2nd time he had driven the car (the first was at Thunderhill).

1974 914-6 conversion
2.7L, 10.5:1 JE pistons, big cams (webcams), headwork, knife edged crank, weber 40's. 901 KA, Q, V = 3rd, 4th 5th. Open diff during this period of time.
15x7 cookies all around with Hoosier 23x9.5x15 canti's in R45 compound.
23mm T-bars, 250lbs springs, 22mm welt front bar, stock rear sway connected.
Bilsteins all around. Car was still heavy.

I am editing a video right now of the same car 1 year later with 450lbs rears and 27mm smart bar upfront and 300lbs of metal taken out of the car. I'll post that later.

You can see Dan's lines and how he uses the entire track to maintain speed.

Seriously, I had forgotten the car was that lose. I will be interested to see the later video with the suspension changes and weight loss, and BAW. wink.gif smile.gif

Hi Dan,

It appears from the video I am editing that the car hooked up better in the rear with the 450's and the LSD. I'll probably finish it tonight or tomorrow. As I compare the feeling of the car's, I know that JWE dialed in more understeer than I had setup on my 914. I tended to feel faster with the more oversteer setup in the 914, but Rich was always telling me to adjust it out a little. I gave in on the 911 setup and so far he may be right.... laugh.gif

I ran across an auto-x vid as well from Candlestick where I was top 3 that day...I'll try to get that out too...

The old 914-6 in that configuration could have used less oversteer as can be seen anywhere where I try to feed any power in a corner.
Fritz handles that much better. Some of that is tires, and some of it is setup.
I still love the sound of a nice 2.7L with webers up on the cams.

Brings back way too many good memories of my old 2.7LRS 914-6. Need to start working on the Significant Other for that one. wink.gif

Hi Aaron,

Probably a little over 200HP at the wheels...it was 230+ at the flywheel. I'd still be running that motor if I didn't miss a shift and have more motor bits than I started with.

A 2.7, 2.8 or 3.0 liter based motor may still find it's way into The Beast.

Hi Dan,

Now that the setup is dialed in on Fritz the way Rich was explaining it to me, I see now that my setup on the 914-6 was too loose. It felt faster, but the effort you are putting into controlling the car are close to mine in, even with the stiffer setup.

The 911 vid shows my hands hardly moving at all, just point and shoot and much more relaxing when the car is neutral. Amazing....makes you wonder how fast you could have gotten our old car at Laguna with the proper setup....1:45's?

I had always felt the 6 was a 1:45 or 1:46 car at Laguna. I guess I will have to consider Rich's suggestion when I start making my suspension setup on my putput.
Yes the inputs were much smoother on Fritz and I felt the same way.
I guess it is time for me to consider a little understeer when I do my setup. dry.gif smile.gif

My 6 was very similar to Bills and my motor was putting out in the 230+ neighborhood.
My problem was I was never able to run tires bigger than 225s on the rear. So no matter what setup I put on it I had mucho oversteer. It was a hand full but a ton of fun.

I just watched again...It was about a 1:52.

The acceleration of that 2.7 over my 2.0 is night and day.

You were able to carry way more speed through 9-10 than I ever have.

I think some of the differance in our lap times ( my 2:00 ) is in the straights and up the long hill climbs.

What is a hopeful lap time for a 2.0 SIX? cool.gif

Hi Trekkor,

I know the FM TT record for GGR is 1:48.3 in Gene Kindred's black 914-6 2.0. He's running canti's on it. I know other 2.0 6's turn 1:52's pretty regularly and it seems 1:54's is where alot of the guys seem to be at on Dot-R's.

I think Rich Bontempi ran a 1:50 in a 2.0 4 out there in the late 90's, but I don't think Rich ever really touches his brake pedal on momentum cars.... laugh.gif

That was the last green flag lap and I had backed off just a bit. I usually do that with any car I am driving to let things cool down. I had several quicker laps earlier on in that session.

Trekkor, Your car should be a 1:52 car once you are up to speed on Dot Rs.

The class BP lap record at laguna is a 1:50.+

That car was probably just a bit shy of totally stock 2.0L wink.gif

Your 2:00 was just fine for your first foray at laguna. In my 1.7L 1970 914 (class Ai) I did a 2:07 my rookie year at laguna. with stock front torsion bars, 19mm welt adjustable front bar and 140# springs, koni adjustables turned all the way hard.

Stock improved 914 2.0's with POC have set 1:54 on Laguna Seca.

V3 class cars with POC break 1:40 on Laguna.

Plenty of room for improvement!

The improved stock class CI with POC is very similar to a Bi/Bp car GGR PCA classifications. 140lb springs, 6" wheels, DOT R compound tires etc.

Here are their rules - V classes are modified based on points. V3 is a fairly tame modified class similar to GM.
