Thanks

Thinking about adding flares to my 72 and I like to know what the general thinking is as to wheel sizes, diameter and width, front and rear.

standard GT flares (7"/9")

street:
7" cookies cutters front & rear with 1 1/4" spacer in the front, 1 1/2" spacer in the rear, 225/50 x 15 tires.

track:
7" cookie cutters front & rear with 1/4" spacer in the front, 1/2" spacer in the rear, 9" x 15 goodyear racing slicks (R250)

future street:
8" x 16 ronal alloys in the front, 9" x 16 ronal alloys in the rear.
i'd like to run 245/45 in the front and 285/40 in the rear, but i can't find anyone who makes the 285/40 in 16 anymore ...
probably going to settle for 225 in the front and 245 in the rear ...

PS: oh, yeah, just in case you're wondering, i have 5-lug 911 suspension.

Track car 9x16 FUCHS replicas front and rear (245/45 R16)

Street car (in progress) 8x16 FUCHS replicas front and rear.

The factory steel GT flares have plenty of room for wider wheels. It kind of depends on your wheel spacers and the wheel offset as to how wide you can really go with the GT style flares.

Factory GT steel flares.
225 - 50's all the way around on real 16 x 8 chrome Fuchs.
The next set of tires will be 245 - 45 - 16's.

Looking to buy something the same size or 7's & 9's for the track. smilie_flagge24.gif

John, (nein14) I sent you a PM.

Ron,

Those appear to be ever so slightly wider flares than the standard GT flares. Are they 1" wider?

I don't know how you guys do it. I've got 7" and 8" Fuchs and my rears are full with factory steel flares. There's a good 1/2 inch there but that's about it.

Now up front I think there's room for 14"s biggrin.gif

Not doubting... I've heard enough stories of the 9" and even a few 10"s. Maybe it's my big old style 15" tires.
John
Eric,

We have been running the 9x16 FUCH replicas on the track car for the last 12+ years. I went to find a set for my current project and found they were no longer made and that the used ones were in high demand (944 & 911 guys). I settled for 8x16 for my street car project.

I have seen 10" on the rear but the GT flares had been widened.
Eric_Shea
Like I said... not doubting. It's probably my tires.

I have the 245 45 16s on 8's and 225 50 16s on 7s up front very comfortably.
I have about 1.5 in the rear to play still allowing about 1/2" inside and out. I would like to widen my rear flares to support a 17" 285 or 315 for the Jack Olson look 914.

Hi Gary
I am running 7 & 8 x 16's with 225 front and 245 rears. 1/4" spacers on rear. You need to look at my car to see what you think.

just a point of interest....

7's fit fine under stock front fenders.

i have 7" and 205's and 8" and 225's under nearly stock rear fenders... (1" pull or so...)

9's SHOULD be an easy fit under GT flares....
ive seen 10's with the right offset fit....

Rear: HPH fiberglass flares bonded to stock fenders 16x9 BBS RS et2 245/45/16 Yokohama a032r 7mm spacers (hub to rotor) - minimal tire to fender clearance (tires rub due to worn wheel bearings and possible trailing arm flex)

Hi Dennis,

Thanks for the info on your car's set up and the offer
to look at it. I was leaning towards 15 inch wheels but
then again alot depends on what's available when I decide to buy.

Can you send me a larger image of your avatar to my e-mail address?

Fuchs 7 and 8 inch. 205 60 15, 225 60 15. Motor out in photo, hence the ASS up stance...

9x15 Fuchs front, 10x15 Fuchs rear with glass flares.

What are you 15" guys running for rubber? Doesn't seem to be many options left for wide 15" street rubber.

I have straetched fenders with 7.5"x17" Cup1 wheels with 235/40-17 in front, and 9"x17" with 255/40-17 in the back.

Martin,

That's exactly what I'm considering. I'm already running the 205 60 15's, so I'd just need to get two 225's.

Are your flares 7" and 9"? Are you using spacers on the rear or front?

The flares are the factory steel flares. Never measured the actual amount. No spacers on rear, and 20 MM spacer on front. The wheel openings are filled up, and the width is fine with me. I have a second set of Toyo RA 1s 50 series on another set of 7 and 8 inch Fuchs. They are very short, and don't fill it up like these 60 series tires.

ohmy.gif I am running 9 x 17 fronts and 10 x 17 rears. 245 x 17 fronts and 275 x 17 rears. 17 inch rims are the smallest I can run with TT Big Reds brakes. My rear flares have about 1 inch of extra 914 metal added to them. Factory Flares.

Thanks JP. The name is Dan and I am looking forward to meeting you in Portland. beerchug.gif Looks like we are going to get some wet weather today here in SoCal. Happy New Year!

You're most welcome, Dan. The only problem I have is it shames me to put my shit box on the same page as your car.
I'll wait till this thread flips over to page 3 laugh.gif
