I'm trying to finger out if my 914 will make My Formula One Journey, from DC to Montreal for the race in June and then to Indy for the USGP and back.

I've got my first 914 less than a year-ago, a nice original condition 1970, w/140k? Used but never abused by the second owner who has owned it since '71, it was stored every winter since the early 80's where it also was cared for every season. I've done the fluids and the engine is not leaking oil from anywhere, I know it needs a valve adjustment, a lot of the rubber is shot, needs new fuel line, brake lines and pads and CV joints boots. I've replaced all the engine and trany mounts with Poly and Nylon ones, Short shift and new shifter bushings, electronic ignition, hi voltage coil and wires. I've got a Bursch glass pack on it, and I'm replacing the oil bath air filter with a homemade cone filter. Oh and last but not least 8 spoke clones w/Yoko AVS, LE front spoiler and Mono wheel... javascript:emoticon(';)')

Its about 600 miles from DC to Montreal a 10 hour drive, another 600 mile (10 hours) to Detroit (hitting the Ford Museum) 300 mile from Detroit to Indy, then the last leg back home is 600 mile.

So what should I focus on to make sure is working properly and should I bring (like spare belt, hose) on this trip so I don't have to sit with my baby by the side of the road (and I don't mean my girlfriend). javascript:emoticon(':o') Should I have spare fuel pump or alternator, any other fuel injection parts? I'm thinking other than a seal blowing or throwing a rod, losing a gear or something major I could do most of the work on the side of the road. And what about driving long distances with the 914 is it OK does it over heat do I need to give it cool down rests along the way or am I good to go for 10 hours or less depending on the speeds javascript:emoticon(':D')


Anyone know of any good repair shops along the route, just in case... javascript:emoticon(':(')

Any help would be great, I know about cars, just not ones with out coolant and don't know about its quarks yet....

AAA membership

drive the snot out of it prior to your roadtrip. put at least a 1000 miles on it, including a few longer trips.
that should bring any major problems into the open. if all goes well, fill both trunks with spare parts, pack your AAA card and go for it!

I'm 3 hours west of Montreal just off of hwy 401. We have some excellent B&B's here, historic Port Hope, fishing (boat rentals), etc.

I have many spares and Mike's 914 is just down the road.

If you're camping you can hoist your tent (and some ale's) here for a night.

Also do a printout of the members map for the people on here that are club members along the route (in case there is a large issue on the trip).

I'm in Longueuil, on the south shore of the Saint Lawrence river, across from Montreal. The F1 track is on an island in the middle of the river. I'm close enough that we clearly hear the cars practice and race. It's a 15 minute walk from my house to the subway station, which is the best way to get to the circuit. You're welcome to park in my driveway.

The F1 race is a big event for my buddies and I. Let me know if you would like to coordinate something.

Thanks everyone for you advice, I'm looking forward to the race and its only 6 months away... I've been going to the USGP since day 1 but this is our first one in Montreal...

To the folks up North, I'm heading up in a caravan of folks, were staying downtown for about a week (OUCH! $$) and we would love to hang out...

For after the race, I can reccommend a hotel about 80km from Montreal towards Detroit in Montebello, Quebec. The hotel is Le Chateau Montebello, and it's very charming, basically a giant log cabin. I have no connection with the place other than sharing the name. My first wife and I stayed there several years ago when we visited Montreal.

I say go for it ! Been there and done that without even a spare tire I blasted a 600km trip in 4 hours 10 minutes, averaging 90+ miles an hour, including slowing down to go thru a City . Next day came back in 6+ hours. Not a hickup
I must have run that road to the challet (summer house) at least 10 times. My car is well kept, as I think yours sounds. Even new cars break down.

Listen, on a personal note, go for it, seriously, how many times, in a lifetime, will you get to have the chance to take a roadtrip in a antique Porsche, to the F-ing F-1 to boot. F-1 weekend is absolutely thee place to be
its here in Greater Montreal in the summer. I host my place many time for my buds out west for the F-1, now I have repeat visits yearly. Not to mention the future is uncurtain how long we will have it here in North America.

Last summer, I drove 5000km. Out of a barn, washed of the moss, blew a heater hose 10 min later, fixed it and made it to my doorstep 4 days later, but it was a Chevy...

When is the F1 race in Montreal?

The Porsche weekend at Mosport is at the end of July.

They switched weekends for nest year. It used to be around June 8 or 9, now it's late June, I think Saint-Jean Baptiste weekend, which is Quebec's holiday.

It's going to be insane in town, that weekend.

So it's going to be like having the Super Bowl on July 4th weekend, only more partying.

That's to give you an idea. Let me know how many people and cars are coming and such. I already have obligations towards a bunch of people who are coming from out of town, but I should still be able to provide some help.

Sounds like a real fun road trip. The next time we go to Montreal we are all taking 914's, but from New England it's not that far.

I always have the following for very long trips:

round relay for fuel pump and headlights
ignition coil
voltage regulator
alternator belt
clutch cable
throttle cable
points and condenser (optional but small and cheap)
all of the above will fit inside your spare tire
some safety wire
about 6" of fuel line and some clamps
1/4" and 5/16" fuel line unions (basically double ended barbs available from flaps)
mechanics gloves
a good flashlight
volt meter
a few pairs of different vice grips
A couple of pieces of 12 ga wire and an assortment of solderless connectors
a good basic tool kit with sockets, wrenches, screw drivers, and pliers
a hammer.
all of this will fit in a small tool bag if you organize it right. Use tool rolls available at sears.

overalls you can slide over your clothes
waterless handcleaner
a few clean rags

Here's an F1 tip. Stay on the Longueil side within walking distance to the subway station. There's a hotel right next to the subway station used to be called the sandman. I think now it's a Marriot. Maybe it was a Marriot and now it's the Sandman. Sounds like Micheal is right down the road. Maybe he knows what the place is called now.

Anyway the great part about Longueil (pronounced longay by the way) is it is only one stop from the track. When everyone is trying to get out of the track on Sunday after the F1 race the subway station will be PACKED. You'll still have to wait in line to get to the station (we did so in the rain last time!), but once you get to the station you will waltz passed all the crowds going back to Montreal to an empty train going to Longueil. Go back to your room, shower up, and then take the subway back to the city to party. Though there are lots of nice places to eat on the Longueil side too and it is much quieter. Though you don't go to Montreal on F1 weekend for quiet.

It's a Sandman, now. My house is a half mile from there. Book soon though. Many people make their reservations a year in advance. The alternative is to wait till the last minute. We have found that a number of rooms are freed-up in the last few days when reservations are cancelled.
In any event, let me know if you're coming.

WOW! I think this sums it up for me, I was thinking about it earlier but OK now I'm must get "her" ready for the haul...

I'm telling one of my friends that its he should take this '79 turbo RX-7 or his Ducatti Monster on the trip. My other friend is taking her '00 BMW 3, like she always does to Indy, at Indy we hang with the BMW group (clubs get a police escorted parade thru downtown Indy, it was a THRILL!), I'd like to to know do Porsche Clubs do anything? Or can they do anything? It sound like Montreal has cranked up the party atmosphere on the Formula 1 weekend?

Kelly, thanks for the check list, I'm going to start stocking up on replacement parts to carry in the car other then belt and hose.

Ilike the other guys advice to drive the snot out of it for alittle while preceeding your big trip. Any issues should show themselves. Incidently, I drove my 914 V-8 LS6 down to Indy this year for the F-1 event...which turned from an event into a debacle! I was so pissed when Michelin screwed up by not having proper tires for the track! Anyway, I have free tickets for next year and wouldn't mind hooking up on the way down there. I live in western Wisconsin. Let me know.

And whatever the party was in the past, it's going to be even better this year, because race weekend will coincide with our long June 24 weekend, which is Quebec's equivalent to July 4.

Well the USGP is the weekend before July 4 so its sound like I'm going to have a CRAZY 3 week trip... All of us going are pumped and we still have 6 MONTHS to go!

Anyone else going to the USGP? I was hoping you guys could take me away from the BMW crowd this year... What does the Porsche crowd do there?

Just need to get some last minute reservations made and we are set... Then get my car sorted!
