Who in their right minds would leave their garage doors open in weather that could do that?

The story is that the garage was closed, the family was on vacation, and they came home to see this after a pipe (or maybe a washing machine hose) ruptured in the unheated garage.

Most garage's aren't heated and you don't run water pipes in an unheated space...love to know the story behind this.

Looks like something above the garage (laundry room?) sprung a leak, you can see missing drywall and pink insulation hanging down from the ceiling.
Had a boss have a washing machine hose burst on the second floor of his townhouse while he was on vacation. Came home to a waterfall coming down the stairs. Bet that was a shock!

This is why when you live in the cold climate, and you go on vacation, you turn off the water.
Your heating system is a closed loop, so no new water is needed under normal conditions.
Turning off the main water is one simple knob, and it lets you sleep better...

Even if you don't live in a cold climate
If we are going out of town for more than two days, I close the main water valve. Cheap insurance.
