does your insurance company have a list of recommended appraisers?

Brad Mayeur is the best choice. He did one for me when I bought my last car.

He did it for me without charge, but then again I just dropped about
$2K at his shop.

Give Brad a call, tell him I recommended the you contact hom for an appraisal.
I really don't think that he'd charge very much. He really enjoys these cars and
it shows in the way he treats his customers.

PCA does a free valuation for most P-cars. But ya gotta be a member.

I agree with that, but PCA will only provide a value based on their evaluation data based on the age of your car and original euqipment for your car.

Brad, on the other hand, will do an appraisal based on actually inspecting the car and noting, in the appraisal, any upgrades you have done.

When Brad did mine, he documented the over-all condition of my car and noted the faded, 30 year old paint. He gave his appraisal based on that information. He also stated that with a new paint job, the appraised value would increase an appropriate amount. My insurance agent accepted Brad's appraisal without any questions.

That's what I did for my car, after paying a professional "appraiser" who told me my very average '74 914 was worth $15,000. (He assumed the odo hadn't flipped yet.) I could have given that appraisal to the insurance company but didn't want to be accused of fraud, and the appraiser was kind of a prick so I didn't want to ask him to re-do it. But the PCA valuation, while not a true appraisal, satisfied my insurance agent, because the coverage is based on agreed value, anyway.
