Up one "click" == slow speed. Sounds like yours works fine on this.
Up two "clicks" == fast speed. Sounds like the high-speed windings on your motor are in bad shape.
Not up or down == stop.
Down 1 "click" == intermittent. This was optional, and didn't come on all cars. The switch has a stop in it to keep it from being pushed down, but the stop can be removed (and was removed in the cars with the intermittent wipers). It is also possible someone removed the stop from the switch on a car without intermittent wipers, or that someone installed a used switch with the stop removed. Or that you just didn't wait long enough for the wipers to move.

Check in the front trunk. On the driver's side cowl support (one of the posts running up and down just aft of the rear edge of the trunk opening, up near the dash) you may find a silver box with some wires running to it. That would be the intermittent wiper relay. If it's there, then you have the intermittent system.

thanx dave
so it seems that the slow and fast might be reversed at the motor?

its more like your motor wiring inside the case is in bad shape IE corrosion and wearing out...

mine is the same way.

does anybody rebuild these?

I had no idea that some 914s had the intermitent wiper option! What years had this, and is it possible to upgrade my '72 to intermitent wiper speeds by;

1) Taking ou switch stop so the lever can be pushed down one click

2) Installing the relay needed on my relay board (?)

3) Using a different wiper motor (?)

I've seent eh Pelican article about upgrading wiper washer to power, and switching the position so the blades rest ont he passenger side, but never any info on upgrading to intermitent wipers.

I need to fix my current non-op wipers and the upgrade is now high on my TO FIGURE IT OUT list

Do a search here for intermittent wipers. There was at least one detailed thread a couple of months ago.

From memory, the relay is in the front compartment near the fresh air box. You won't need a new motor.

Here's the location of the stock relay. I believe the relay is $70 or more new.

The relay.

I think a member on the club was even selling the wiring harnes as a kit? I think?

Troy, if you need a switch, let me know, I think I have one.
