is this possible?

I start my car cold, and it runs real lean. Brand new sensor from PP...runs fine after a minute or three...do ya'll think that the resistance of the new sensor is TOO LOW? DOesnt make much sense to me...bc the lower the resistance the leaner the mix. Should I put a adjustable pot on the sensor?

2-3 kOhms at 68 F between ECU plug terminals 13 and 17 (ground). At 14 F, 7-12 kOhms, at 176 F, 250-400 Ohms.

i cant see the multimeter...too dark and cold.

I'll have to do it tomorrow.

everything is buttoned up real nice, so i dont think vac leaks are an issue. Unless I have a cracked plenum but i dont think that's the case.

i'll get back to it tomorrow.

If i find something way outta line, i'll know

dwell is in low 40s....

IIRC Dwell should be 48-52 ( I could be wrong)

I always check when setting mine...cant remember the setting.

Check your FI seals they get old and leak just a little...but times four its a good size leak.

Here is how I did it on my Djet volvo....

I could not find the leak...
I unplugged every line from the intake...plugged them all.

Get the car warm first...

First take out the injectors and replace or check those seals...
Then, plug in each vacuum line one at a time...check the car each time you add a new line...check tming etc...

It is a PITA, but its the only way I know to not chase your tail...It costs nothing...and you will find the leak.

Now, I think Slits or Capn said valve cover gaskets create a vacuum leak on a LJET...never heard of it..

What kind of motor, fuel injection? Does this car run
a computer for the fuel injection?

What makes you think your car is running lean when it is cold
when your first start it?

Almost every body else calls them ECT.

How come your think your car is lean on startup? When a car
is cold it suppose to be rich. On most water cooled cars
( i assume air cooled also) if you unplug the ect the computer will think it is -40F and default to rich. New computers will
check with IAT and other temp sensors. If it is obvious the ect is wrong the computer will ignore it.


Does this car have an air pump? If so maybe the air pump was
running during startup to make the exhaust look lean. Of course
at this time I don't know how you where determining the car
was running lean yet. So that is just a guess on my part.

because instead of doing things that other teenagers do like going out to eat, and going to the movies, or rolling around in the grass and down hills...I was busy screwing with this car.

I know its lean bc its backfiring through the intake

ECT = Engine COOLANT temperature sensor. the 914 is aircooled.

this is a 914 forum, i'm talking about my 914. smile.gif

oh and when you unplug TS2, or the Cylinder Head Temperature Sensor in a 914/Type4 the engine will not run...period.

I know this is a 914 forum. biggrin.gif It just seems like half the people
here have some other motor stuffed in there car on this site.

I did not know backfiring through intake automatically = lean missfire.

Have you tried spraying either water or something else that
make the engine run better around the area you think might
be leaking? We do this a lot to try and find the leak. I know on
a 914 will be hard to get in there.

I know you probably do not have access to $1000 smoke machine.
I have heard other people using those cheap halloween smoke machine
to find a leak. I have never tried the cheaps halloween smoke. Just heard of people using them with ok results.

its definately a head-to-intake runner leak...because when i really went after sealing things down and tightening things down it idled DEAD cold....

and i found some 1.7 metal intake gaskets that i'm going to use....i'll just put some anti-sieze on them to provide some additional sealing....

i knew it was running lean because the L-jet worked PERFECTLY before I took the right side runners apart to fix my CHT (cylinder head temp) sensor. when i brought this up in my mind, it made sense that this was the problem.

why would you use antisieze for a sealant???

just buy the THICK fi intake to head haskets from pelican.

i have these metal intake gaskets, and i read over at the samba that some use anti-sieze to get the metal gaskets to stick to the head at the right point for torquing down.

Typical programing glitch...

The multi threaded program opened to many threads and overloaded the processor...

I think the water cooled variable pushed the memory limits of the older machine that the Miles program is running on...we need to upgrade the hardware that Miles is running on to a multi processor machine.

With a simple target of Britt, the variables could be kept to a minimum...

with as much as I post, he should be running a dual XEON processor system with Raid arrays and some 4gb of ram... drooley.gif

I think that may be the problem.

It was originally written to participate in each thread that you were in.

Then it was upgraded to have Miles respond to each thread you were in.

Then once it was upgraded to respond to each individual thread that you posted, there were some issues.

Bandwidth and multi processors should fix the issue.

Once that is done we will have the Miles program working perfectly. Its basically a Britt shadow program.

The hard part was generating relevant responses that were indeed on topic, but were not repeating.

I have to applaud Andy for creating this very intelligent and helpful Ai program.

the program even has voice capabilities!

oh but andy, the AIM module snap-in is messed up, as miles.exe never seems to ever get online anymore.
