Hey all, wanted to solicite a few opinions. I currently have all black interior and I wish to switch to tan. The carpet is shot, the seats are fairly banged up, and the back pad has cracks so replacing/re-upholstering these is a no brainer. However, my door pads are in awesome shape. I was contemplating trying to keep them some way. Maybe re-do the door pockets with tan vinyl and leave the doors black, get some black floor mats.

My intial reaction is that it wouldn't look right. Other option would be to get new door panel shells to put the tan vinyl on and sell my black door panels to someone who needs them

Or should I just re-upholster my door panels. huh.gif

Thanks for the input!

a black and tan combo interior looks pretty good I think....

.....hmmm a Guiness mobile that has potential!

If the material on the door panels is in good condition and very clean, there specialistthat dye to what ever color you want.

I have a light camel-tan interior and it was not possible to recover the knee pad or the visors. The dye-guy mixed up the exact color and air-brushed it on.

No one's noticed the difference, and it has not deteriorated.

Don't have a picture handy..but you prolly get the idea.

I used to get a lot of people commenting on this combo. Of course the wood dash helped to.

Let's see some more pics of that zambezi 914!

74 1.8 with "big bore" but I'm guessin it's a 1911. I'll have to have a look at the paperwork when I get there. Either way it'll work. This may be the 914 (6th one so far) that may get a 2.2-ish 4 motor eventually.

Tan interior
TROJANMAN
tan interior with black accents is ok
black interor with tan accents, not ok

I think black interior with tan door panels and seats would look good.

Leave the door panal black, but cover the smooth part along the very top with smooth tan. Then maybe also do the flat panel between the dash and windshield in tan as well. if you do tan carpet and tan seats, you might want to try it woth the old black backpad to see if tan or black works better. I believe I would do black carpet and backpad with tan seats.

I like a grey/black combination personally, but for me, the exterior color of your car drives what color the interior should be.
Bertus
I agree, with the Zambezi Green exterior I think tan works better.

I did something similar, wanted to keep some interior pieces black and convert some to tan. I like the results. My seats, backpad, console pad and drivers door pocket are tan.

I can supply more pics later if you wish.

I thought that car looked awful familiar.....

I had to use pics that the PO sent me because other than pics of my car at the FFC the only pics I have taken are of rust areas. I must not love my 914! Here is one from the FFC!

Blitz, that is almost exactly what I am contemplating. Could you post more pics when you have time, especially of the tan door pockets.

Thanks a million! biggrin.gif

Will do, it will be this evening. I was in a similar state as I had collected some interior parts and took the best of each set and liked the results.

Actually, with the bright green exterior.... I'd LOVE to swap over to a black interior...... My interior is in such great shape, that it seems like a waste of $$$ for me to change, for no other reason than a bad color combo.

Bright green, with tan/brown interior? Ugggg.... the 70s.

Agreed. Brown doesn't work that well for bright green. Dark or delphi would be another story. You need tan.

Hey..... thats the way they built it.

I dunno... maybe in 1972 it did work?? LOL

Here is the view you requested. Hope it helps.

Mix-n-match interior isn't my favorite. It's not bad, but it doesn't light my fire either. mellow.gif I say sell your blacks for tans.

if your door panels don't have any speaker holes in them, leave them alone and sell them. for someone looking to match the vinyl pattern in their seats, they have some real value. buy jp's nice brown interior in the classifieds. the brown is a damn sight cooler in the summer when the top off.

Thats OK Clay, I have the photos that Wayne took. Thanks anyway. I guess that means if I ever make it back to Texas I get to drive your 914, right? wink.gif

Visited some upholstery places today, got some wide ranges in price. One place quoted over $3K for materials and labor to do the seats, door panels and back pad. Other place would do install if I get the seat, door panel and back pad kit (e.g. World Upholstery) for $150 a seat, $350 for the back pad (labor only), seems a whole lot better.
