what kind of ducting can I use to go from the blower motor to the J tubes? Is there any alternative to the stock ducting?

Knowing that one of the biggest problems with the heating system in these cars is heat loss. Has anyone tried using the foam insulation that comes in a can to unsulate the main ducting in the inner long?

This might provide more to the paper insulator that is already there.

the paper "insulator" in the longs is actually a "muffler" ...
it "muffles" the sounds from the engine comp.

so, yes, insulating foam will help. btw, the factory thought about that possibility, that's why our cars have so many access holes to spray in "Hohlraumversiegelung" ...

When I bought my 914 a while back, there were no tubes connected to the blower motor. It was just kind of hovering over the engine with nothing to do. I didn't know about this site or how to get 914 stuff, so I went into the attic to get some PVC tubing and fashioned what you see here. I painted it black so the Home Depot stickers were not visible. My cost at the time was about $4.

There should be minimal heat loss through the j tubes and hoses since they're not that long. If the heat exchangers are in good shape and the control flapper boxes are properly adjusted, the heat is enough to keep us warm in Chicago, should be more than enough for California (even in the mountains).

the stock, flex hoses should work just fine. if you're not getting a steady stream of HOT air out of the defrost vents, on the road, even without the aux heater fan, you have other problems.
