An 'anodizer'. Try:
(909) 923-0562
Danco Metal Surfacing
1750 E Monticello Ct
Ontario, CA 91761-7740
The process is called 'deanodizing' and takes about 5 minutes. My anodizer did it for free so I could get my wheels polished and brought back to him for anodizing.

If you put oven cleaner on the anodized parts of the wheels, it will remove the anodizing from the alumnium. |

Ezoff is a milder solution of hydroxide than I used commercially...
Reaction with Al or Mg will produce Sodium Oxide and Hydrogen gas (as in BOOM) and will eat AL rapidly.
Try commercial paint stripper. It may be a stronger solution of hydroxide.
That said...I don't know...but I don't need a clock.

Oven cleaner generally is basic in nature with sodium hydroxide. Drano drain cleaner is a little
more concentrated. Just read the label. If you mix the drain cleaner with some water, be careful as
it generates heat, even boiling and may spatter. Wear glasses and protective clothes.
---
Look for one that says "do not use on aluminium because it will corrode it". Active ingredient
probably sodium hydroxide.
---
Don't forget proper ventilation.
Gud Luck!

You can get granulated lye (for unclogging drains) at the hardware store.. usually red devil brand. SLOWLY add it to COLD water WHILE STIRRING, in a plastic bucket big enough to put the whole wheel into. It doesn't take much, and heat is released as it reacts with the water. I'd say 1/4 cup of lye per gallon of water is plenty. It should strip it in a matter of miutes.
WEAR GLOVES AND WELL SEALED EYE PROTECTION WHENEVER YOU'RE EVEN NEAR THE STUFF! It will blind you before you can blink.. really.
When you're done, unclog your drain with it.
BTW, sodium hydroxide is lye.

there was this guy who popped open a coke and drank it, only to feel excrusiating pain shortly afterwards.
Apparently the sodium hydroxide used to etch/clean/do something to the cans wasnt washed off or something....
i dunno.

Aaron,
do some searches on the pelican 911 board.
but short answer:
yes...
The one that works best for me:
Easy off brand
but they make a couple of flavors and the yellow can is "heavy duty"
thats the only one I like.
takes about 3 applications.
don't let it sit too long as it could etch the alluminum
spray liberally. let sit for 15-20 minutes. Wash with a hose outdoors and I use a soft green dish pad to wash it off with. make sure the temp is warm enough or it doesn't work well. 70degrees or a sunny day is best. Like I said, 3 applications before its really off. after the 2nd application you'll be able to see what anodizing is left. (after the 1st one it will look better, but sand paper will reveal that it hasn't cut through yet)
here's a pics of our project rims done this way:

It works, I've done it on bicycle parts before. It not quite like using paint stripper. As stated above, it will etch the Al. It also may require a fair amount of elbow grease to finish the job.
