Bought a new 73 a few weeks ago, pulled the panels off after drilling out the rivets. They had been drilled before when the PO went Fi to Carbs, but he went and put rivets in again, only larger. The F***G holes are 1/4" dia. I went and bought some pan head screws to replace the rivets, but there they like a pimple on the end of your nose. I thought I would ive with it until I got around to painting it again then weld the holes. Any suggestions?
The good news was no rust...

there should be no reason to remove the rocker panels to even touch the motor....carbs or FI, no differance...

Well it appears there are fuel lines running under the panels. Def hose... I just assumed that's what they were.. Did I just step on my D**K?

fuel lines go thru the center tunnel....the only lines that go on the outside of the vehicle are for A/C and the charcol evaporative system (depending on year)...if the PO installed fuel lines behind the rocker panels, he needs to be hunted down and kick in the nuts

Well SEEEEEEITTTT. I guess I will be tracking those lines down.. THe car did not have A/C...

On the drivers side? I bet its the charcoal cannister lines.

Yes Matt, as I recall 1/2 or 3/8" lines, two of them, driver side only..

evap. system, helps with the gas fumes from the tank....

Fuel injected cars had charcoal cannister to clean the air or something. I dont know the details on how they work, but I know my webers dont have a provision for them, so I yanked my lines too.

Looks like someone did the conversion right if they went through the trouble of removing the lines and not just cutting them at the firewall!

for a race car maybe(for weight, a whole 5 poungs max)...for a street car, removing them does nothing benificial and does not affect the operation of the carbs....

deal the holes, learn how to weld or buy new rocker panels

Why have lines that connect to nothing?

When I took out my FI, I removed the return line and plugged it at the tank. Sure, you could put a bolt in the fuel line after the tunnel, but whats the point?

You can fill weld up holes that big easy.

Ok I will live with them for now, and weld fill later before paint.

Actually the purpose of the charcoal canister/evap system is to hold the fumes form evaporated gasoline and them release them to the intake . This serves to reduce the smell of gasoline in the pasenger compartment and to save the whales or darter snails or whatever.

Fill the holes in both the door sill and the panels. I never rivet or screw them on and they stay just fine. Makes it really easy to pull them off every so often to clean.

I've done it to 2 cars and never heard them vibrate or rattle.
