Absolutely nothing is wring with the 914, just saw the MR2 yesterday. Wife said no problem, even drove me an hour to get it. Durn thing is a blast. Heavier than a teener, but shifts like a dream, handles nicely and has AC. Stopped at a traffic light and took off a roof panel without getting out of the car.
The 914 is in trouble now!

mr2s are fun... I actually prefer the previous incarnation to the new spyder style... but congrats either way

I like Mister 2s. Thats the toyota way, y'know. See a good product and copy it- with improvements. But the outward characteristics are usually pretty similar. Camry is a 190 mb, tundra is an f-150, etc. But don't you threaten that 914! What you need to do " is wring with the 914". (sorry I hadta )

No I haven't pushed it, but no way it will handle as well. Dead 70 series tires and 160K mile struts against R tires, bilsteins and tons of negative camber.
What I really like is the shifting. The 914 has all the upgrades, but the toy is more like a toggle switch then a shift lever.
No pics until tonite, but trust me it is not pretty. Very tired paint, couple of dents, but NO RUST

i valet cars, and this weekend i drove a MR2 spyder, it was a pretty cool car, i liked it even though i barely fit in it...not a whole lot of room, less than a miata, but still cool

Throw in a GTS motors and you got yourself a car. Can't for the life of me understance why toyota only put in the gt motor.

Can't really disagree - my son is thinking about doing an engine swap this summer.

I'm assuming that you got a MKI or MKII due to the high mileage.

I learned how to drive on the track in the MKI. I loved that car. I bought it in college for $1500. It had 89K miles, needed a fender and 2 seats. I beat on that car every day for 3 years. When I sold the car, it had 215k miles and still ran like a champ. All I changed was oil, brakes, clutch and timing belt.

Since then I have owned every model MR2 made. This is my current MR2. 2250lbs/280rwhp.




The 3SGTE turbo motor fits nicely in the MKI.

Or you can get one of these. TRD 4AG formula atlantic motor. 300hp NA.. The loudest motor I have ever heard.

I always liked the Mk2s. One of my friends recently bought one ('91 Turbo) for his new track car. Needs some work. In a couple of hours, we took apart all the intake and turbo plumbing, replaced leaky valve cover gasket, removed the POS "GO Fast Bits" blow-off valve that did nothing but suck boost and make noise, reconnected all the vacuum hoses and

That thing will be fun on the track - but I didn't like the shifting. It was really rubbery and vague. I'll take my 914 (w/shortshift) over the mister2 in that department. Up next is replacing the leaking power steering rack...

I see this is an old thread, just wanted to chime in as an MR2 Turbo owner, 320rwhp on race and 260rwhp on pump gas, and custom hail dents. It was the joy of driving my 2 that lead me to build my 914. The 914 is not finished yet, and in fact I have never even driven one! ....can't wait.

heh....I'm setting up my 93 Mr.2 T for SCCA C Stock....done, actually cept for tires.
It has 165K miles on it (I put on 100K of those) and it that time it has needed one rear wheel bearing...plus normal maintanince.

I bought a set of real ugly alloy rims (rims is ricer talk for wheels) for a hundred bucks, some new Bilstein sruts, and some "crash bolts" to get -3 camber up front.
I have refinished the wheels to get rid of the ugly red.

I have AXed a few times over the years and it sure as hell don't understeer at the limit. Tain't as quick as my old 914 at AX.....but neither is your car.

It took over the 914s winter nesting spot.

Hmmm, I was looking at MR2s on Craigslist last night. I've always liked them. There are some late 80's for $1000 or so. I should save my money for paint and a "6". We shall see.

Great shot. My ideal garage to go along with my yellow 914 is to replace my black Boxster with a yellow one, then add a yellow MR2 and a yellow Lotus.

If anyone in the Bay Area is interested in a nice 1st generation car, I will probably have one for sale in the next couple months. '89, white, manual, t-top, 1-owner, garage kept all it's life. Belonged to my mother-in-law who recently passed.
