Gonna take another whack at getting the tight drain plug out of the trans. I know the case and the plug are different metals, and may very well expand at different rates, the question is would it get tighter or looser if I put the heat gun on it?
Mueller
the case (hole) will expand more than the plug (as long as a steel plug is in there)....
Rand
A heat gun won't help. You would need more intense, concentrated heat. But I wouldn't do that to the tranny case.

I think it is magnesium, which is not a candidate for a torch in my book. If I do it and can't get the plug out, I will have to pump out as much as I can, could not be good to get that stuff really hot.

What are you using the try to remove the plug? I had a hex head for my socket wrench that had rounded corners (I think I got it at Bugformance). I couldn't get the plug out to save my life. I went to Sears and bought a 17mm allen wrench. The corners are nice and square. More surface contact, more force, out comes the plug.

If you can't find one without rounded corners let me know, you can borrow mine.

Thanks, looks like I am going to Elk Grove. I got the cheapo chinese one. The dummy at Bugformance never could get that horn thing figured out. Getting one ordered though when I start collecting rubber body seals.

A 17mm headed bolt welded into a socket works excellent..... Try tapping on the tool with a hammer, while it is inserted into the drain plug before loosening it..

Also, always remove the FILL plug before the drain.. if you don't do this you may end up with a drained gearbox with no possible way of refilling it because the fill plug is seized- there is NOTHING worse than that!
(been there, done that!)

I live in Elk Grove, but work in Racho Cordova, if that is more convenient for you. Let me know, and I will dig out the wrench and give you directions to either destination.

I had to weld a cut off allen wrench into my striped out plug. After that it came right out.

get one of these 17mm beauties. works dandy on your breaker bar.

Thanks Jake, got the fill plug out and topped it up, just think new fluid would be a good idea. Hope your Father is doing well.

Haven't seen a plug yet that would stand up to the torque of the Big Effin allen wrench with my foot against it while holding on to the bumper for leverage.

Did put a cheater pipe on one. while it was out of the car.
