points or optical trigger?
Dr. Roger
if your sure the ignition is being triggered correctly by correct points gap or optical trigger, then make sure your plug wires aren't switched.

then, if your getting sputtering out the tail pipes, then just advance your dizzy a bit and try again.

You want to start out by setting the "static timing". Set the engine up to TDC on the #1 cylinder (use the flywheel or fan markings), then hook up an extra spark plug to the #1 plug wire. Tape it so the threads are touching a ground like the fan shroud. Turn the key to "on", and twist the distributor until you see a spark. Turn the key off, tighten the distributor clamp when the distributor is right where the spark gets triggered.

That should get you close enough to start the engine.

Oh, and as was said--make sure your plug wires are on correctly!!
