I'm adjusting valves on what I was told is a 1.8L engine. I've checked 2 exhaust valves and found them to be 0.006 instead of >= 0.008 for a 1.8L.

How do I confirm that its a 1.8L engine? Below are the stampings on the top and the bottom of the case.

Thanks,

EC means 1.7 but a PO could've installed 93mm p&C's for more hp.

Adjust them to .006

according to this site's 914 info page, under engine serial numbers,

EC = 1.8L

W,EA & EB = 1.7L

The valve clearance is the SAME (.006") for all the engines w/o sodium filled exhaust valves. I dunno where you got the bogus information, but it should be corrected before others are misled. The Cap'n

I was looking at a printed tech article that I got with my 74; not sure where it came from.

quote from article:
First, general rules:

Be sure that you use the correct clearance values for your engine: .006 INTAKE... .008 EXHAUST (for 1.8 and 2.0 litre) (.006 BOTH for 1.7 litre)
END QUOTE

However, from PP tech article:

quote from PP tech article:

Engine Model Intake Exhaust
914-4 1.7L 0.15mm / 0.006 in. 0.15mm / 0.006
914-4 1.8L 0.15mm / 0.006 in. 0.15mm / 0.006
914-4 2.0L 0.15mm / 0.006 in. 0.20mm / 0.008 in.
END QUOTE

So I should do both intake and exhaust to .006.

Set them at .006 as the Cap'n explained..

EC is a 1.8
EA is the 1.7

Either way the valve adjustment is the same.

OK, so I adjusted the exhaust valves to 0.006. Not an issue since the engine is sitting on a stand in the middle of the garage.

Later I checked with my Haynes 914 repair manual and they group the 1.8L engine with the 2.0L at 0.008 for the exhaust. I just love when information from different sources agree.

.006 just like my Type I.....
