hi all
i have inherited four dark green injectors with my parts car.they are soaking in FI cleaner overnight.how do you know if they are bad?

send out for testing or hook them up to your FI and trigger them (safely)

recent (last week) and weird injector story...
I sent injectors out to cruzin performance for cleaning and rebuilding.

4 of these happened to come from a recently running car.
I saw their spray pattern with my own 2 eyes and they looked good..
however looks can be deceiving...

there is a static pressure test that tests for an internal seal.
this is a seal that can not be replaced during rebuild and if your injector fails this test there is no way to repair it....

remember that I saw 4 of these with my own eyes have a nice spray pattern.......


anyways out of 9 injectors shipped for rebuild.
8 of them failed and are not rebuildable.

I was blown away.
it surprises me how many of them out there are probably not good.

I'm not familiar how you would possibly test this on your own.
makes me very suspect from now on of used injectors.
I would highly suggest a reputable rebuilding resource.

So... if there were from a running car (meaning the engine runs reasonably), and they looked "good".. what is it that makes them "bad"...

I don't know if its a 5% problem or a 100% problem.

I would guess that an Internal seal failure would look like a leak...

perhaps when I pulled and bench tested them I didn't notice the "leak" since they were wet from spraying into the test cup....


but failure beyond repair, sounds not too good to me.

perhaps it only hurts fuel mileage....
but perhaps over time it destroys then engine???

just don't know.

If they fail a static pressure test, it's most likely that while they work now, they'll start leaking sometime soon. "Soon" may be next week or next year. Depends also on what pressure they run them to. If they're running them at, say, 50psi, then they'll never see anything like that in a D-Jet system, so they may work for years to come.

these injestors came with the parts car engine that i know nothing about. I am having the engine rebuilt as we speak so that should tell me more.
What is a static test? I put 12V to all four and two clicked while two did nothing.
the engine is far from done so i can't test them in the engine and last time i checked they were about 80$ each new.you do the math.
I just spent $8200 to have the 914 brought back to life and i have an outstanding bill (when done) for the engine of about $1000.00
So now i am on the cheap.
When she is done i will then include pics.you all will have to wait.

I would offer a 2nd train of thought...

it sure would be a shame to ruin that new engine from running it lean due to a failed injector.

I don't think this is an area you want to cheap out on.
your investment is too big at this point..

If you had carbs and 1 of them was from a parts car of unknown origin, and it wasn't clear if it even worked or was gummed up... you'd rebuild it before you put it onto your brand new motor wouldn't you?

good chance of frying the injectors hooking them directly to 12vdc...they are not designed to handle too much current

what FI do you have? there a few ways to "trick" it to get a spray out of the injectors....

I am currently going through this also... be interesting what you find out.

BTW... my local flaps can order the injectors for like $52.00 per.

Really not a bad price... I am thinking I might just replace them anyway.

I'd still test them....I've had the "rebuilt" FLAPS injectors fail on me.....

this is an interesting topic. While I would guess that at least one of my injectors would fail, the car runs well and I'm reluctant to mess with it even though I'm curious....

Send them to witchhunter.com. local to me. Guy is real nice and professional. $15 to service. He'll be the first to tell you that there isnt al lot of "rebuilding" with these injectors.
Ill try and scan an post a report provided with the batch he did for me recently. Out of like 15 injectors 6 were serviceable! No charge for any that didnt fly.
