been with out a computer for 10 days now.... (at school...)

laptop has 3 year extended warranty thru bestbuy.
its 1 year old.

i rook it in, because the AC adapter female jack on the computer was loose and had an intermittant connection.... (fails to charge sometimes)

best buy "geek dumbass squad" says we dont do hardware, we sub it out to a warranty place.....

10 days later....
my mom picks it up. (today). i drive home between classes to get my computer (online reports and tests to take.... tired of the library dry.gif ) and i boot it..... IT HAS A NEW OR REFORMATTED HARDRIVE!!!!

anyway... im not going to write about how i almost got thrown out of best buy... or the loss of 40 Gigs of data, and a fair amount of legit purchased music downloads.....

anyway.. so im SOL... computer is having them do the system recovery thing to try and see if they can save anything...

kinda sick to my stomach thinking baout it....

so yeah. thats where i have been.......................................

wishing i was im the bahamas as matt's thread says smile.gif

Dude. Sue 'em. This is america!

Sounds like a mess. Aren't you supposed to back up important stuff on a disc or something. (Look who's giving computer advice). laugh.gif Anyways the Bahamas are way overrated. Cheer up, it could be worse. It could be raining.

they make you sign away any rights.....

Signatures don't really mean anything either. Just say that you were not aware of the implications regarding possible data loss. Hand them an approximate value of the legitimatly aquired data and ask them to settle. If they don't, then turn up the heat.
Jenny
Sorry to hear about your best buy/computer woes. At least your ankle isn't broken. smile.gif

Anyway, PM me your mailing address, and I'll send something to cheer you up. wink.gif

same thing happened with my work lap top. whats worse, the company it geeks did it to me. wiped out a year and half of critical records. you'd think the company geeks would know to back up and reinstall data.

hey jen if i pm you my mailing address will you cheer me up too?
Elliot_Cannon
Jenny your avatar cheers me up. Sexiest pic ever.

Standard procedure, always to do that.

Just like in remodeling when the people still live there, on Fridays always cut the water lines so they have no water over the weekend. biggrin.gif

Best insurance policy ever. ...backup.

Ouch 40 gigs of porn! How will you ever recover?
bd1308
of Miles goat porn too.

so many hours wasted downloading them.

Oh Miles....?

Standard issue biggrin.gif

Although when I fix DC jacks (do it all the time for people--30 bucks a pop) I backup thier data when I have the itching to randomly gut thier OS...

There is a lot of data on my computer at home, but the only stuff I would _really_ lament loosing would be my music and picture library. So, that stuff gets backed up, and is mirrored on 2 different machines. Even though my older PC has no speakers and was de-authorised to play iTunes stuff, I still use it as a big back up drive for pictures and music.

Any documents that I have are mostly unimportant. I guess I should save my current flow diagrams and things like that. But for the most part, papers that I wrote last year are not going to be important to me. Lost game files just means I get to play more. reinstalling applications is a PITA, but its not the end of the world.

But yeah, for the future... Anyhting that you don't want to loose should be backed up, and anyhting that you _really_ don't want to loose should be backed up on multiple media (CD - second hard drive - etc.)

904 gauges you douchebags. I'm going to pick them up right now.

Hi,
being on both sides of the fence on this one...

The standard policy is to replace the parts.

Your system probably needed a new motherboard...that is where the charging plug is soldered to.

So, when you replace the board, the new board does not recognise the hard drive.
They just fdisk it, and bingo, it sees the new drive, although all the data is "lost"

There are some online places to look for pricing...look up computer forensics...these companies specialize in recovering data.

In the future...put everything in one directory tree...under Aaron.
Then all your documents, homework, music etc can be there...
Usually its not as much data as you think.

Then back it all up before you pass it off for hardware work.

If your laptop has been taken apart, it will need to be taken apart again...probably within one year...so be careful...

the bahamas is very beautiful...ive been there several times. St.Croix is amazingly beautiful. I have all of my computers working, and i'd STILL like to be there.

Talk about high jacking a thread.

How about you start a thread of your own.
Subject matter something like " Head Douchebag gets new gauges for ...."
Matt Meyer
They did the same thing to me.

Look on your "bill" no charge of course. Mine said they optimized my system by reinstalling software. And at no charge also. alfred.gif

Did you read your work order when you took it in, before you signed it? I bet you signed on the part where you declined the data backup. It would have cost you.

I backed up, but missed a bunch of pictures my wife wanted (not that kind of pictures) and some music for my daughter. I was able to recover everything I could think of with this Recovery Software. smilie_pokal.gif

You can run the "trial version" and see what it finds and then buy it if you decide to recover it.

I am sure there are better progams out there but I figured the trial is free so I had nothing to lose.

Also it takes a long time, like defraging 120M hard drive on a 486. I let it run all night.
Aaron Cox
so i just jacked my roommates computer tongue.gif

anyway - work order said loose connection.
i was asked if i had any "critical data" on it..... it didnt click to me that the harddrive would be erassed or replaced....

i signed off on the wirk order (fine print sucks....)

so yeah... thanks for the comments.

life gave me lemons.... so i chucked em back as hard as i could laugh.gif

Jen

i made my dad come with me (computer/electrical engineer)

anyway - the guy said, "its not that dramatic to lose all your data" - i was like "WHO ARE YOU TO TELL ME THAT MY DATA ISNT IMPORTANT, AND THE LOSS OF IT ISNT DRAMATIC"

"sir if you dont lower your voice i will have you escorted out of the store"

and when they fed us some BS about comouter stuff in general, my dad was like "I design this stuff for a living. thats BS!"
Jenny
Hm.. that wasn't as dramatic as I was hoping for. Not the loss of data, I mean. But the scene you made at BB. Next time I'm down that way, how about you and I go sling some dog poo at the store front? biggrin.gif

Aaron,

Was not trying to poke.gif.

I took it in to have a key on the keyboard fixed. They also fixed a USB port (didn't expect that). I was completely suprised the harddrive got reformatted. I had a little talk with the boy behind the counter. He showed me the fine print. His manager? came over to supervise our discussion and back him up.

My reason for posting is I think I managed to recover an enormous amount of data with the linked software. I ran the trial version. It listed pages and pages of files to recover (not in a nicely structured way). I bought it and recovered all the files I wanted.

If you want to recover your data do not use the computer until you try the software. You kids with these reliabile computer don't remember when corrupted hard disks were less than unheard of.

I am trying to recover this 14 year old computer....and man the HD is so touchy.....
