last week my starter went to draggin something fierce.so i purchased another and decided id better get it changed in a bit of a hurry. [daily driver] so i went under after unhooking the battery and disconnected the wires ,got the easy bolt out ,and then went to reach over the starter to get to the other.well i figured out a socket wouldnt go on the bolt and fumbled with it for 2 evenings without getting a rubber neck and takeing a peak..today i did and found out it has tits, big ones. well big enough to keep the socket off of it ,and with no room for a wrench ?.....well i figure there is a way to get to it another way beings this looks as if its purpose is to hold the bolt ,,,,,so can someone give me a pointer here.....and mayby awnser the important question ''why''? oh,its a 72 1.7

Sounds like you have one of the bolts with the "D" shaped head. This is to keep it from turning when you remove the nut from the engine side.

yep, that be it ..... dont tell me ive got to yank the motor ......ok,tell me how the hell do i get it out? is there access im not seeing?

Use a lite or flashlite to shine on the other side of it in the engine compartment near the fuel pressure regulator.

no need to drop the engine ...
remove the air filter. the nut is right there, top of the engine, driver side part.
the bolt will slide out with the starter once loose.

Take out the air cleaner it should give you a lot more room.

Like the other guys said pull the air cleaner and its under all the wires and tubes running along the back wall. I had someone tap on the wall from the otherside to help locate it.You will find it. When you put it back in make sure you put some gum or tape on the bolt to hold it still while you tighten the nut. She is a bitch to get out, but far from real pain.

I learned this the hard way...... didn't know about the 914 club at the time.

Clamp a set of vice grips on in, in the engine bay side..... then wrench it off from underneath.. no prob
