ok, so i'm going to put the permanent numbers on my car for saturday ...
looking at the PCA/GGR rulebook online, it is, um, er, "ambiguous" at best.
plus, it doesn't seem to take the new classification system into consideration.
and no mentioning of a "rear number", which i recall was discussed here before ...
so, am i just not looking at the right stuff? anyone have any pointers to more "up to date" rules on placement and size of car numbers ???

Andy,
For AX you only officially need a number in shoe polish on your windshield.
I know that the last few years the "powers that be" have been complaining about numbers on the front and sides of cars...but if you follow the rule book they are not required. They can complain all they like but the rules do not require anything more.
I believe the rule book actually states that the person teching your car is to put your car number on the windshield for you after you pass tech. That way the tech crew easily knew which cars had been teched. Folks just don't like to read and/or follow the rule book.
For a permanent AX number you need to contact the AX registrar....Eugenie Thomas about what numbers are available. The online list is at least 2 years old.
From the GGR Rule Book
"2.6A Autocross
All drivers will be given a number at registration; this number will be marked on the car at technical inspection."
What else do you need to know?
There is also no requirement for your AX classification to be displayed on your car.

Andy,
I went through this at the beginning of the year with Fritz. For AX, it doesn't really matter. If you're going to do time trials and want a permanent number, the numbers have to be 8" tall on the sides and front of the car and 4 inches tall on the rear. Also for TT's you're supposed to put the TT class you are in, and the class is on the two sides of the car at a minimum. They can be 4 inches as well. If I remember, the rules may even say 6" numbers, but I think they say 8". That's what I have on Fritz.
I'm trying to get a single digit number right now...don't know if I'll be successfull...

Varies by region and area,,,,San Diego assigns numbers and has banned shoe polish at AXs and DEs...
Sizes are 8 inches tall for numbers, 6 inches for class.
Duct tape or blue painter's tape is OK.

From GGR rule book for TT car numbers and class designations
2.6T Time Trial
Car numbers and letters must be on the car and correct for the driver at all times in order for course personnel, event officials and your fellow competitors to identify cars. Numbers must be a contrasting color, and distinct from a distance. Reflecting numbers are discouraged and shoe polish is not allowed. No numbers on windows. Numbers must be from 8 to 10 inches high and 1-1/2 to 2 inches wide and must be securely attached. The number on the rear can be only half the regular size but still legible. The car classification letters should be half the size of the competition number and placed after the number on both sides of the car.
Numbers shall be placed on both sides of the car, on the front and the rear of the car.
Location, style, legibility and mounting of all car numbers are subject to approval of the Tech Inspector.
The driver number is your GGR Certification Number. For most spouses, this will be the same number as the husband's with an "L" appended.
Car numbers will remain as designated for a period of one series year. Nonparticipating drivers may reserve their number for $25.00 per year for a maximum of two consecutive years.

When I started racing I found some confusion in number size. The SCCA said one thing PCA-SDR said something else? I found that the main thing is for the numbers to be easily read for about 100 feet away or the longest distance from your car to a flag person at any track. I finally went with some really bright numbers and sort of the "NASCAR" style although the vintage early Porsche 908, 910, 917 numbers are really easily read too.

thanks. except, that wasn't my question ...
i'm going to run TT/DE this year. got a set of nice vinyl permanent numbers to go on the car.
i'm going to put them on for saturday, no matter if i *need* them for saturday or not.
they're going to be "permanent" (duh!) and i'm sure i don't really need them for driving down 880 to work either.
my point was, the online rulebook tells me that i *need* numbers for TT/DE but it doesn't really tell me exactly what i need to put where ...

numbers are 8" tall, 2" stroke, black on white circle, circle dia. 16".
i've got 4 of those, could do each door, front hood, rear hood ...
BUT, i need the class designations "GT-2R/AX1" on the doors and a smaller number on the rear.
is that correct?
yes?

Use tape....you usually get classed at the first event or at the scrutineer/safety check if they have a designated shop or paid organizer.....
Have you tried calling the event chairman?

Apr 18 2006, 08:28 PM
Andy,
Those look great! You can put one on each door and one on the front hood and one on the rear trunk lid. Like these.
Class designations only need to be 4-5 inches tall and on each side only. No front or rear requirement for class designation.

GGR has a "permanent" classing system. meaning, i'm AX1 for autocross and "GT-2R" for TT/DE. that won't change unless i get another car or make some major changes to my car.
so, i'm going with permanent on the class designations as well ...

In GGR each participant is responsible for classifying their car. Not the technical crew. They only check to see that your car meets the safety regulations and is mechanically sound to be on track.
Andy,
You can place your class designations on the rear quarter infront of the wheel openings on each side. Or you can put them directly after your numbers on the doors. It is up to you, as long as you meet the minimum requirements and they are easily visible.

Hey Andy....you're in my GT2R Time Trial Class!....alright, someone to run against!....
I'm blown away that you are in AX1. Randal and I are in straight on race cars and were AX2. Andrew Blyholder and Steve Nieslony have cars that weight about 250lbs a piece and they are AX3.
The AX system needs some tweaking, especially if your car is still street legal and not running turbos!

yeah, the classing rules say that if you do a /6 conversion, to go back and change the base class from 914-4 to 914-6 ...
that bumped my basepoints from 275 to 400 which was enough to bump me over the AX2 limit ...
AX2 1151 - 1250 points
my car currently: 1,320 points
gotta lose 70 points somewhere before friday (when i'm going to put on the numbers/decals) ...

Andy,
Just call it AX2 and be done with it. With Randal and I in there right now, what's the diff?
Besides, we can always call our own class at any time. In fact, the steering committee suggested that a bunch of us with the GT level cars call a class for ourselves and duke it out....especially the 3.6 liter cars...
When I classed, I was all for it, but no one with the 3.6 cars or GT type cars wanted to run against me.
Only Randal, and he's still down....

Shhhh...Doris knows about the 2.7 motor....but I haven't dropped the 3.6 hint yet...
I gotta start working on her....
The 2.7 is a full motor and a steal....just got a wonderful deal. I could turn it around and sell it for double what I paid for it....even at core prices.
The 3.6 is from a 1992 964 with 52K miles....but the price is really good and that motor would still be killer in a 914.
Then I could really see which car is the most fun...The Beast or Fritz. I love 914's but I have to admit Fritz really is a cool cat!

That is exactly what I am doing with my class designations. That way if I modify the car then I don't have to remove sticky letters and numbers.
Plus I don't want to have a bunch of extraneous stuff on the outside of the car.
At AX I will have the AX designations and at TT I will have the appropriate designations.
That is another problem with the new points system. Before If you car was BP for AX it was BP for TT. Not anymore
