Hi,

The PO installed 100W H4's and a heavy duty VAG relay in this 1974 914 2.0 project.

I have read through the threads here, but still do not have anything definitive as far as adding relays, how many, and recommendations as to what kind.

Perhaps the easiest thing to do is drop to a 55W / 60W H4 with a heavy duty relay....but......

The PO put in a 16 amp fuse in the #1 position - left low I believe. With a stock relay - it blows. The HD VAG - with 8amp - it blows. The 16 amp works fine.

If I were to keep the 100w bulbs - should I set up relays on each low beam circuit?
Does anyone have a recommendation of a relay? Hella? Should a 25amp duty relay be safe?

Also - the high beam indicator is not lit with the HD relay in place. The bulb is good - socket checks. The hi beams do switch. Perhaps a Tachometer grounding issue? Any other ideas?

Thanks - this board is great and has been extremely helpful to this new owner!

This site is really good for this type of stuff.

I say back it off to the proper wattage. The wiring can handle the upgrade but the car is 30 years old and most have electrial issues. Sounds like you are playing with fire to me. I just bought a set of H4 with the 50% Xenon bulbs (HL78151) from the guys below. THey are like a 10 minute drive from my house and were awesome. The bulbs are wicked bright compaired to the regular sealed light and work just fine. BTW I only paid $92 for the special bulbs and the glass housings. With regular bulbs they would only be $81 for both lights with shippping. Highly recommeed

I will check the 12 volt site - looks completely packed with information.

Also - i dropped down to a 55w/60w bulbs today and left the single heavy duty relay in place

16 amps ought to cover it for now.

Thanks!

I know this is an old thread, but did you ever get your high beam indicator to work? I'm having a similar problem....

thanks,
Jim
